What happened to longest running talk show in Atanta Ike Newkirkshow?

This was the only commercial free program on the radio as far as I know for 30 plus years. Yes, it was very early on Sunday morning 5am to listen for talk on politics, sports happenings anything you wanted to talk about. He has a tremendous vocabulary and knowledge of political events with an outstanding memory that I have never heard before. I will certainly miss him on the air!

Chances are nothing has happened to Ike's show. After all those Sundays he never missed over all those years I think he's just now starting to take off a weekend every now and then. One reason is that a daughter is attending university in NYC and he's taken some quality time to get her set up, etc. His most recent time off may have had something to do with the inauguration.

Bottom line...I suspect Ike is becoming more acutely aware of his own mortality and is beginning to divide more of his time between his family and his audience.(I.E. His wife is probably beginning to give him some real heat on the topic. Just and educated guess.)

When I came to Atlanta in '69, Ike had just started doing his show and actually had occasional on-air guests. How's that for some ancient history? Everyone one at WQXI has come and gone except for Ike.

The Lord dealt Ike a good hand.

I worked with Ike in 1969 at Quixie. What station and what time is his show on ? I would like to get in touch with him.

Ike used to umpire our Sunday softball league sponsored by the local restaurant/bar scene. He was much more entertaining behind the plate than behind the mike, IMO.

Now that I haven't heard Ike for yet another Sunday morning in a row I'm inclined to start thinking along the line of RTibbs. I wonder how many managers are starting to hide under the cover of the dismal economy and especially tanking media ad revenues to do things they wouldn't have dared to otherwise. Just a thought from an old cynic. You can be sure I'll be tuned in again next Sunday on the off, off chance that he took some accrued time but admittedly that would be very unusual for Ike.

Alas...Open Line is no more.

Open Line used to run each weekday evening between 10:00PM and Midnight, (or was it 11PM?). Some of the former hosts before Ike Newkirk took over in 1976 were Mark Van Brooks, Bill Conover, Harlan Parks, Guy Sharpe (yes, THE Guy Sharpe), and Bob Mann.

I started at WQXI in 1961 and to my knowledge it was the first telephone talk-show in Atlanta. It was certainly the longest running. I had to maintain the kluge that was the 7 second tape delay machine....

Odd. I was listening to Ike as early as the late 60's. I am certain that 'Open Line' precedes 1976. ???

Yes. Open line goes back to at least 1961. Ike was in charge of Public Affairs and did some PA programs prior to 1976. In 1976 he took over Open Line from Mark Brooks.
