What Happened to TV Characters After Their Shows Went Off The Air?

Malcolm In The Middle: Malcolm suffered a nervous breakdown after being disciplined for supposedly groping several students in college. When another student confessed to doing the groping Malcolm was cleared, but Lois, unimpressed, punishes him anyway upon his return home. The breakdown was a result of Lois' continued abuse. Malcolm next filed for emancipation. Lois threw Malcolm out, resulting in his moving to the Salvation Army. Meanwhile Hal and Lois' marriage deteriorates, with Hal no longer speaking to Lois. Malcolm-with Hal, Reese, Dewey, and Francis supporting him-is granted his wish by a stern judge who brands Lois a sorry excuse for a mom, causing Lois to throw a temper tantrum, she is then carried out of the courtroom and sent to a mental institution. Hal then divorces Lois-deciding to end the insanity-and gets custody of Dewey and Jamie [Reese moves out, getting into filmmaking]. Malcolm gets a new pad and enters UCLA. Hal visits Malcolm's new place and decides to move next door.

Gilligan's Island

The Howells had both passed away by the late '80s, leaving no heirs. However, thanks to the new-fangled science of DNA testing and a strand of Mr. Howell's hair on a comb, it was discovered that Gilligan was the illegitimate son of Mr. Howell - the result of an extra-marital affair. Gilligan (who then adopts the name Thurston Howell IV), inherits their entire fortune, which he successfully invests in a cruise ship company. He then hires the Skipper as the ship's captain. He buys the island and turns it into a resort. The managers he hired were an interesting duo: One tall and debonair with a thing for rich Corinthian leather, and one short and squat with a funny accent and an airplane fetish.

The Professor went back to high school science teaching, with emphasis on survival and making seemingly odd object into functional machines. One of his students was a kid named Angus MacGyver.

Ginger returned to Hollywood and became Queen of the Slasher Movies in the '80s. She turned to TV in the '90s and '00s and had several notable appearances, among them as Diane Chambers' mother on Cheers, and a season on I'm a Celebrity - Get Me Out Of Here!

Mary Anne went into the bakery business, financed by Gilligan (who was also one of her best customers), with successful cookie and brownie brands...until the DEA found out exactly what was in those products. ;)

1) Andy Travis becomes color commentator for the Reds. He has to cut his hair to please Marge Schott.

Does he buy a pair of trousers that aren't obscenely painted on? :)

Both Foghorn Leghorn and Henry Hawk became spokesbirds for Kentucky Fried Chicken. They later co-starred in a failed UPN sitcom.

Foghorn Leghorn just ran--unsucessfully--in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate
in Arizona. He was handily trounced by incumbent Sen. McLettuce and is rumored to
be headed back to local TV as a sportscaster.

"Here are the ball scores--Angels 3, Devils 2..."
...both Mel Blanc and Kenny Delmar will be waiting in the Ninth Circle with a ball bat that has your name on it for that comparison, 6479 ;-) ...

Around the time that the Foghorn Leghorn KFC ads were still going strong--1990--do any of you remember the Looney Tunes TV dinners from Tyson? Here's the commercial for these meals with Daffy, Sylvester, Tweety, and Bugs--plus a rare Speedy Gonzales appearance at the end:

Apparently these meals didn't sell too well (unless the Looney Tunes plug was just in commemoration of Bugs' 50th birthday in 1990--and after that year they reverted back to regular TV dinners--from the ad it appeared that these meals would also be adult sized too)--I don't recall seeing the product or the ads after the summer of 1990.

In addition, after ABC cancelled "The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show" (1997?), in light of the then-recent "Space Jam" craze--and sadly, after the last of the two Chicago Bulls' Three-Peats as NBA champs--do you remember the MCI "5-cent Sunday" (5 cents a minute all day Sunday) ads with Bugs and Co. with Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, etc.? Here's one with Daffy and MJ:

Good ones, bpatrick!

Come on, everybody knows WKRP was bought by Clear Channel, and now airs 24/7 infomercials for GoldLine.

Herb is sales manager for a small CC cluster in northwest Ohio where he sells remote broadcasts from polka festivals. His wife left him to become a school secretary in suburban Chicago.

Johnny made some shrewd investments, and is now the sole owner of Red Wigglers, The Cadillac Of Worms, whose commercials are heard on CC stations almost as frequently as the Safelite Auto Glass spots.

Jennifer is governor of Ohio, and is now in training to face Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm in the 4th annual "Jen Vs. Jen" mud wrestling match at The Dirty Bird in Toledo the night before the Ohio State-Michigan game.

Venus formed a comedy team with Byron Allen. His catchphrase, "Byron, you're just not funny!" swept the nation.

Andy left radio, learned to play the accordion, and now plays polka festivals in northwest Ohio.

Bailey is the receptionist for a paper company in Scranton, PA.

Les does infomercials for Sneaky Snoopers.

Mr. Carlson bought a semi, changed his name to "Droopy Drawers", and became famous as one of the Truckin' Bozo's favorite callers.

On the Bob Newhart Show reunion Howard Borden said he had dreams of being an astronaut and they showed a couple of quick clips from I Dream Of Jeannie.

Funny thing is, on some of the shows that are people's favorites, you get the sense that life simply went on a lot the same for every one of the characters after the show ended, we just didn't get to see it.

At the end of Cheers, Sam shuts down the bar for the night at closing time after everyone's left (someone shows up at the door and tries to get in after hours but he's told, "sorry, we're closed."). But you know he's going to open up again at the usual time the next day, with the usual gang of regulars filtering in at the usual time, and it'll keep going for years to come. We just won't see it.

Same thing for other long-running comedies, any of them that didn't neatly wrap up the narrative in a finale like Happy Days did, should probably be assumed to just keep going on with their characters slowly aging and life slowly changing at a real-time pace.

One which COULD have been interesting to see as an update and follow-up would have been Seinfeld, whose main characters we last saw in the Latham, MA jail. What do they do when they go back to NYC and resume their lives? What craziness do they get into? You can pretty much figure that Jerry hits the standup circuit again and maybe finally gets that sitcom or cable talk show he wanted...Elaine marries, has a kid, divorces and lives a life a lot like Old Christine (so we got our answer to that part of the story on TV, only on a different network)...George probably moves back in with his parents and repeats the cycle of futility, probably in the front office of the Mets where his decisions help mire the team in its current mediocrity...and Kramer tries standup comedy and creates a scandal with a politically incorrect routine. The actors themselves did a reunion, playing themselves, on Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm..There was actually some talk of a Seinfeld reunion show, either a two-hour TV special, miniseries or theatrical filml, to pick up the story at some point after the characters are released. Jerry said he'd do it if he or Larry David could come up with a good enough story line, and hasn't ever ruled it out even today. Guess they just haven't come up with a story yet, that makes them want to give it a shot...

Full House-Becky lost her producing job at "Wake Up San Francisco" after socking co-producer Art Simmons in the face, breaking his jaw. Next she divorced Jesse citing irreconcilable differences and moved with Nicky and Alex to Cincinnati to work in TV there. Also, to D.J.'s disappointment and Danny's and Stephanie's delight Kimmy moved to Philadelphia. Joey also left San Fran, moving to New York to work with a woman named Ann Loblaw on a TV-talk show she was hosting. Danny continued on Wake Up SF with different co-hosts and Michelle entered high school, following in her sisters' footsteps.
