What has happened to wlrs over the years is a sad tale in radio history

There downfall started in the 80s when djx was born and djx always kicked there but!!!

Then they did okay briefly with the rock 102 then they flipped to mix 102 we all remember the computer"new year bring new radio station to 102.3 fm"

Then they flipped the format back to lrs 102 in 1997 and stayed that way till summer 99 right after the first lrs flipped to love 102.3 and that was really the death of lrs!!!

Then bluechip for some stupid reason put the station back on 105.1 in march of 2000 and i liked it it was a good commercial alternative but then radio one after a year or so had to f with it and made it mroe active and active and then hired just awful talent like freak show joe oh god!!! And i remember they did get like a 3.8 back in spring of 2001 or 2002 i think that is because the talent was decent but then radio one just ruined them big time!!!Big time!!!

Radio one should never have brought them back ever!!!

Well rest in peace wlrs you were great back in the day!!!

Being 80 miles from the 102.3 stick, I didn't get to listen to much of it over the years, but in the very late 80's/early 90's, Rock 102 Pure Rock & Roll really appealed to me. Rap was ruining top 40 & Rock 102 gave this white boy a safe haven. It was tricky, but I succeeded in listening to Rock 102 30 miles south of Indy...when they blew that up, I started listening to Country. My last acceptable top 40/rock option was gone, but fond memories live on. Thanks to all who made that superb radio station what it was 'back in the day'...

Even sadder is that no one airchecked this station.

HP, WLRS got it's clocked cleaned when WQMF, not WDJX hit the airwaves. And what happened to WLRS is nothing new under the sun. It's happened to bigger and better stations. WLRS died when it left the 102 feq. After that, it was only a name. Not to mention the majority of the current day WLRS 105 listeners don't even remember the pre 1983 fame of WLRS and how special and important it was. Get over it.

Actually, LRS was blown up real good when it became "Mix", though the countdown was cool. If you remember, they originally called themselves "W-MIX". The real WMIX had trademarked the call letters and sent the Louisville "W-MIX" a cease and desist.

Interesting story about the CHR days, a friend of mine worked for WAVG at the time Lee Masters flipped LRS to CHR. He told me Masters wanted to release the AOR airstaff. His goal was to create a high energy CHR. The Henson Family wouldn't allow the dismissals and told Masters to use the existing staff.
