I've been traveling around most of the state and it has been a very interesting radio aircheck trip. Kentucky has good sounding radio for the most part but it needs to be heard online. A lot of the stations don't stream online. Lake 102-3 in Somerset is a really good combo of hot AC and CHR that I know a lot of other people would like if it was online worldwide.
But in the Corbin area on the weekend I was stunned to find 2 stations doing countdown shows that really had nothing to do with their main format. WTBK 105.7 which is supposed to be a rocker has Rick Dees on, and on WCTT 107.3 which is a mixture of AC/hot AC, they have not only Backtrack USA but American Top 40 AND Rick Dees. I think that's bad programming.
Kentucky is also the state with the most hot ACs or adult popish sounding sdtations not streaming and I wonder why. Is Kentucky poor or something?
The new WHHT Howdy 106.5 near the Mammoth Caves was an exceptionally good country station and wish I could listen to it at home. Wuhu 107 & 99-7 DJX are all great sounding CHRs but they need to get in with it 2010 and find sponsors for streams. And as a matter of fact I did the very same thing - went down to the Mainline studio and told the people working there that DJX needs to stream. And they didn't laugh at me - they just told me it was a lot of things to handle.
I don't agree with stations such as WREZ 105-5 The Cat having Open House Party on all night on weekends. Probably have to delay my leaving Paducah to actually aircheck a regular jock after Kid Kraddick in the morning. What a terrible station for CHR - almost everything on it is syndicated.
WQXX 106.1 in Morehead should drop their sports on nights and hand it over to a real sports station and concentrate on their hot AC format.
Star 103-7 in Frankfort needs to focus more on currents - they play too much old stuff.
All this is in my personal opinion of course.
