What if Sharks/Red Wings goes into double OT on Derby Day?

My guess is that NBC would have cut out of the hockey game and run the derby since it appeals to a much broader audience than the hockey game does. The hockey game would have probably continued airing live in the cities of interest with the derby running later on tape. The real question would have been exactly what time to cut out of the hockey game since only 15 minutes of the derby is worth watching while the other 1:45 is jockeys bios, video of the Queen, and how the horses got their names.
BTW, the Barbaro special is now airing tonight at 8 eastern on NBC.

Let's be realistic here. The entire Derby show from 4:30 pm ET to about 6 PM is all hype and filler, and as such totally disposable if need be. It's also possible NBC could have move that pre-Derby stuff over to CNBC for the diehards. But the NHL game would likely have priority on the Peacock since it's Playoff time, ratings notwithstanding.
Do you know that once upon a time (the '50s),
the entire CBS broadcast of the Derby lasted
30 minutes (race and all); even before TV, when
Citation won the Derby (and the Triple Crown) in
'48, CBS radio devoted only a half-hour to race
coverage. I told my dad (who was alive in '48)
about this; he said that's all they need now.
I don't know what any of you thought of the
Barbaro special, if you watched it; I thought it
was touching without being mawkish (Bob Costas
wouldn't have let it be any other way, IMHO).
It will be interesting to see how his brothers do,
although there is the question of whether whatever
went wrong in Barbaro's right hind leg that caused him
to pull up in the Preakness is genetic. But that's
probably for the off-topic postings. One of his brothers
is eligible for next year's Derby; the new colt will run
in 2010. I'll be watching them both, Lord willing.

Personally, I wonder if horse races need more than 20 minutes. 10 for analysis and watching the horses get loaded, 2 for the race, and 8 for post-race analysis.
Well, a not of pregame/pre-race shows (or even post shows) are overkill. Like with the Super Bowl...why in the hell would we need six to eight hours of postgame filler (depending on the network)? Personally, all I would want in a pre-race/pregame show is just Xs and Os info, and some information about certain players.
