What If They Held A Miss America Pageant And Nobody Watched?

But offering a scholarship as
the prize in my mind sends entirely the wrong message.

Well, it's the right message but unrealistic. Then again, college sports is all about scholarships, and we don't have a lot of Rhodes scholars on the basketball court.

Well, there was Bill Bradley, and...um...

Late Supreme Court justice Byron "Whizzer" White. Rhodes scholar. Played basketball, football and baseball for the University of Colorado. Halfback for the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions.

Tom McMillen. Rhodes scholar. Played basketball for the University of Maryland. US Olympic basketball team. Seven seasons in the NBA.

Any Rhodes scholars in the Miss America pageant? Miss Alaska pageant even? How about America's Junior Miss?

To be fair, compare numbers of Miss America scholarships with all sports schorlarships. Figure the odds. And Miss America didn't do scholarships when Byron White was in college.

Is that both women and men's sports scholarships (under Title IX)?

Women have disproportionately higher admission rates, higher GPAs and higher graduation rates in higher education and post-graduate education. Sounds like men are being discriminated against in academia.

Ah but the question is if the beautiful women have the same GPAs as the less-than-beautiful women.

Thanks to affirmative action and male susceptibility to feminine wiles, beautiful women don't need to worry about GPAs.

Well, there was that Miss Teen USA contestant representing South Carolina who imagined peace in "the Iraq"... ::)

I heard on "America's Funniest Home Videos" it was on, but then I just forgot. Though when I turned on the My Netwrok station's movie I had a nagging feeling I should check the listings.

Bert Parks was the best. Whoever decided to dump him probably ruined the Miss America pageant. (It would have been ruined eventually, but Parks departure hastened the process.)

For those who like classic films and have an interest in this subject, may I recommend "Smile", a Bruce Dern movie from circa 1974. Very under-rated, but a spot-on look at beauty pageants with some nice on-location shooting from Santa Rosa, California. Must-see 1970's movie, with a sneak peek of upcoming star Melanie Griffith.

Count me in as a Bert Parks fan! I was very unhappy when they canned Parks. No one could sing "There She Is" like Bert Parks.

And I do remember the Bruce Dern movie. It's a great film.

Maybe they were counter-programming the NFL Playoffs to get the chick demographic and whoever else didn't want to watch the NFL games?
ABC could've accomplished that with a Romantic Comedy movie. They didn't need something like the Miss America Pageant

Cheers :D
