What impact did "Soul Train" have on black--and white--America?

    • there is no mention of Cleveland having picked up the show within its first month.

I guess more digging is needed, if that can be done.

I had already mentioned earlier in the thread that WJW-TV aired Soul Train Saturday October 8, 1971 (4PM)..This is according to The Cleveland Plain Dealer Historical Archives.

  • Tim, I know your research is thorough and your sources are on point. Perhaps the article has some errors, but I think it may be right about Birmingham. It makes sense given the large Black population there; if you can get the show into Atlanta then Birmingham should not be far behind.

Just to clarify, when I talk about the Cleveland Plain Dealer Archives, this is actually the entire paper online most dates between 1845-1991, including ads, comics, and special sections. The info about Soul Train on WJW is the earliest TV listing I could find..Probably the first episode, though its not mentioned that it's a premiere episode..

Re: Reasons Why 'Soul Train' Went into Decline

Hence during the last two years of its syndication run, "best of" episodes were being used. As a matter of fact, where I live, Soul Train would come on at 2:00 in the morning.:
1. Don Cornelius stepping down as host is the most obvious one. DC was the "face of the brand" pretty much. It's kind of like how when Dick Clark stopped hosting American Bandstand and they got some younger, unknown guy to replace him. AB only lasted one more year (by this point, they were airing on the USA Network). It didn't help that In Living Color did that stinging parody sometime earlier in which everybody on Soul Train is elderly. DC's pretty open objectification of hip-hop meanwhile, made him look like he was loosing touch with the changing times.
