What is it gonna take for Radio One to make a change at 94.5?

Recent PPM: 1.7. This station sounds like pure garbage, and I know they are not making any money. Last but not least, KRNB is beating the snot out of them! Like my friend said, they need to start by getting rid of that "K-Soul",(K-Mold), name.

If they are making budget and ratings goals in the key demos, they are not going to change. They don't want to be number one, they want to make money...If KKDA ever beats them in the key black adults demos, then we might see a change.

Their signal is terrible

Potential

I love the KSOC calls, they would be great for an Oldies station, or course that will never happen.

The K-SOC Sock Hop!

It will take Radio One selling the station. As long as Radio One owns it, it will be urban, no matter how bad the ratings get.

I don't know why they won't at least relaunch the station with an "80's, 90's, and Today's R&B" station and rename it My 94.5 like their urban ac stations in Charlotte and DC.

Radio One has Urban Gospel on KROI "Praise 92.1" in Houston, which hit the air in 2006. Surprised they haven't launched the format in DFW.

I've been wondering the same thing....

It works in Atlanta, and Radio One has it on a weak signal there.

True, WPZE is only a Class A (3,000 watts at 143 meters). However, it is on the right side of town for the format. KSOC is not. Maybe it would still be a good move for them though.

More Black folk are moving north than they are south. With the KSOC app they should really promote hooking your phone up to your car radio and using that to make sure they are heard all over. I still say they should have bought KHVN, moved it to 97.9 and put the hip hop format on 94.5

I couldn't agree with you more

That may or may not be accurate. Do you have any data to back up that statement? Also, define "north" and "south".

That is a ridiculous notion. You do realize that urban gospel is one of if not the the worst performing format from and power ration perspective. Maybe Radio One should just not have taken the deal when they traded 102.1 for 94.5 and cash.

North of 635=Flower Mound, Keller, Plano, Frisco and Allen. South-Desoto, Red Oak, Oak Cliff, Glenn Heights, Cedar Hill, and Waxahachie. Yes the data is out there. Look at DISD..Black folks are moving out in droves. When folk move to this area, they are moving were the schools are better. Black folk are moving to the "affluent" areas now.

So if Black Gospel was so bad, why are KGGR and KHVN still around. With KHVN being a heritage station in this area, I'm sure it would have done well at the 97.9 frequency. Then you take the 970 stick make it a black talk/ministry station. No ministries on the 97.9 stick, just music with upbeat gospel music in the mornings, more mellower music in the middays and upbeat on the way home. Give something that has never been done in this market: A full signal FM Black Gospel music station.

Look, you made the claim. I'm going to go digging through school district records to prove or disprove your unqualified comment. I suspect you are incorrect, but I am not certain. Anecdotally, I think the black population is growing out to the suburbs, but I am not convinced it is to the north in any huge numbers.

So if Black Gospel was so bad, why are KGGR and KHVN still around.

Mortenson runs a very cheap and efficient operation. That's great. I'm not arguing that there is not a place for urban gospel in Dallas. But Radio One could not bill anywhere close to The Beat with a gospel format on 97.9. And, the idea of putting gospel on 97.9 and moving The Beat to 94.5 is preposterous.

It was in the Dallas Morning News about "black flight"

http://www.dallasnews.com/news/education/headlines/20100609-black-flight_changing-the-makeup-of-dallas-schools.ece

You may think its preposterous to put gospel on 97.9, I think it would have been the way for Radio One to make big splash for their entrance into this market.
