What is the best use for AM radio in the Carolina's

Granted AM radio is now an under dog in most areas but what do you think would be the best use of AM stations in the Carolinas. There is a lot of differences in an AM station in the city and a rural station out in the country. Now that AM is allowed an FM translator (if one can be found) that will work in the AM's area and it is already preexisting then that changes things completely for AM stations too. What do you think, is AM over the hill in some locations? or are there other uses that just aren't being used yet.

Greenville/Spartanburg is a dead AM market. The only thing even remotely worth listening to is the ESPN station which has a challenged signal outside of Greenville. Most are poor signals, poor programming.

I think that greenville should have a music station on AM that is actually listenable. Not that crap on 910. Greenville needs a top-40 station on AM or maybe even radio disney. Something other than that horrible format on 910.

Top 40 on AM ???

When some spoken word formats can't even succeed on just AM anymore? I think oldies is more realistic....1070 did it for a while in '06

Don't confuse what I am about to suggest with the often heard "live and local" mantra. That usually means the writer things we need to go back to a 1960s through 1980s dj play hit records and chatting us up. No!

However. I look around me at the people in their 60s, 70s and even 80s that have either conquered how to load content on their iPods or have found someone to do it for them.

The national talk, both political and sports, migrating to FM, one can make an argument there is nothing left to fill up the cauldrons of AM stations.

Content that is national in interest will gravitate toward the national (FM) talkers, or if it is of interest to a niche (national) audience, then the Podcasters will beat local AM stations because of economy of scale.

I can visualize a future for small market AMs doing local content, most of it with minimal "live" presentation. It is going to take some innovative people to squeeze the costs out of content acquisition.

I draw a blank on what we might do to utilize the metro AMs. Toasting marshmallows may win the annual "Genius Award".

And all of this is not just limited to the Carolinas.

A lot of the AM stations serve their communities. Some of the smaller towns might not be able to make it work, but the FMs have pretty much moved to the big city.

In the Greenville area, the only AM even worth considering is daytimer flamethrower 660 which had quite an audience in its glory days as WESC-AM. At least it now has a 250 watt FM translator that is on 24 hours and has some pretty decent coverage though it can't hold a candle to the AM's 50kW daytime signal.

660 is a waste with what they're running (ratings = nonexistent), but no way it could be viable with any format, really, so I guess it doesn't matter. If it were 24 hours, CC would have a big-time talker (like WWNC, WVOC) with it I bet.

If 1070 was running with good equipment and max power (day/night), it may have been something. 1330, 1440, 1260 have good Greenville coverage but as the area has spread out, their signals have not. Heck, 1260 is silent.
