What is the easiest and best way to transfer old tv shows from VHS to DVD

Like many here have probably done in the past, I used to set my VCR to record certain TV shows all the time and I still have many of them. I'd like to make myself a few compilations of some shows or categories on DVD and not lose any of the original quality (which wasn't always great to begin with). Anybody have a suggestion for the best and least complicated way to transfer these video cassettes to DVD? Thanks.

Get a DVD Recorder/VCR combo and dub away! Self-contained within one unit. As long as the source isn't copy protected, you're golden! I myself have a $100 Magnavox DVD recorder. I hooked a VCR externally and dubbed about 135 numbered videotapes which took roughly 13 months. Phew! :)

Last year, I bought an LG HDD/DVD recorder (it cost me about $300), which as you can guess, has a built-in hard disk for which you can transfer your VHS tapes directly to the disk, and then, providing you don't do any editing and you do record in the speed mode you prefer (I use LP), make a fast dub to DVD. I've often used my recorder to tape various educational programs (mostly documentaries).

You could also get adapters and software to do it on your computer, but I agree that the DVD recorder/VCR option is the best way to go unless you want to do some editing to the tapes. On what I've done, it's just been straightforward dubbing and I haven't had to use my computer.
