What is the status of 700 Club on ABC Family?

Like I warned, I was too tired to post on Robertson (or anything else) last night, so I'm doing it 24 hours late...

I taped the first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes of the Club yesterday (Gordon Robertson was subbing for his dad) just to see where the disclaimer was dropped in. There it was, at the very end of the program (no "necessarily" therein).

FYI in the '90s and early 2000's (after getting DirecTV in late 1999, broadening my channel selection) I was, at one time or another during that period, a regular viewer of the following preacher shows (not necessarily a complete list)

700 Club
Hour of Power
D. James Kennedy
John Hagee
Hal Lindsey (bought a couple of his books)
Jack Van Impe (bought a video from him)

and if there are any others, I can't think of them right now.

I'd usually tape these shows for later playback. (With a VCR in my room, I rarely watch anything "live" [i.e. as it's being broadcast] anymore other than some sports.)

I listened to some radio preachers and commentators too (again, not necessarily a complete list).

Joe Chambers from Paw Creek in Charlotte, NC
the late Carl McIntire from New Jersey
John Dekker from Baltimore
the late Marlon Maddoux from Dallas

McIntire and Dekker aired on WBMD 750 Baltimore, which dropped both preachers when it joined Family Radio.

As for Robertson and his ilk, I won't throw stones either. Nor do I expect to give them any more money. A few bucks at my church every Sunday (and Thanksgiving Eve and Christmas and Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday and Good Friday), I hope, will suffice.

I'm no churchgoer, but for those that do, your church (or synagogue, or mosque, or temple, or whatever) is the best place to donate money, as they need it most. For those who don't attend church, patronise the next garage sale, or fish fry, or bingo, etc., or even just give -- they'll be happy to take money from anyone. If you do just that, there's no reason to give to charlatans like Pat.

I have noticed lately that 700 Club does not always air at 11 pm as it use to on ABC Family.

Robertson can whine all he wants that TV is evil and immoral, but the industry has a long history of providing family-friendly programming (Small Wonder, Leave it to Beaver, among countless examples) virtually from Day 1 of television. He's got money. If he's so concerned, let him start producing family entertainment if he thinks it's so easy to do, and so crucial for people's souls. At least the Crouches at TBN make cheap attempts at doing that.

Its the bad stuff that people gripe about the most and overlook the good. Thats a no brainer of course but its hardly the religious folks doing it. My next door neighbor is a headmaster of a local private school. He refuses to allow his children to listen to the radio and watch TV. He says neither has "educational value". The other day he told me this and I brought up the many of different PBS feeds that are available right now, the Discovery networks, TLC, etc.....He never heard of them !! In his mind people are still stuck in 1977 when all there was were ABC, CBS and NBC.

Radio he might have a point though.

If Pat wanted a family channel, maybe he shoudn't have sold off The Family Channel.

At least the Crouches at TBN make cheap attempts at doing that.

And lest we forget Pax, who tried making a family-friendly network -- and failed.

Bud Paxson was more interested in making a quick profit - through infomercials and shows with product placement built right in (remember "Woman's Day TV," "Great Day America," or "Treasures in Your Home?"). The "Family Friendly" portion was just the sales pitch.

As for making a quick profit, Paxson learned the hard way that programming a TV network with actual entertainment programs was different than what he learned running HSN and the all-infomercial network that came before PAX. The profits, despite the 18 hours of infomercial programming, never came.

Today, Hallmark is the closest thing that comes to the original Family Channel. However, they seem not to program for the entire family, as there is little (if no) programming for children or teenagers on the network. Most cable networks outside of Disney, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network have given up on kids shows. Hallmark's religious programming has been shrunk to one Evangelical/Pentecostal program ("World Impact"), the LDS Church's "Music and the Spoken Word," and a Catholic mass every Sunday morning. A far cry from when they were the "Faith and Values Channel" or "ACTS/VISN."
