What is WGSR going to do with W18BG low power relay station?

A friend of mine told me that they heard that WLXI has sold their low power relay station in Danville to WGSR. They going to move it to Martinsville so they can have another TV station?

True. Agreements were signed and it appeared in the FCC's Applications list 3/12/09.

They going to move it to Martinsville so they can have another TV station?

Not planning to do so. The new signal has a commitment for carriage on one cable system, with others examining their options. That, combined with the viewership on our Martinsville cable operation, hints that we may do much better to leave it in Danville.

This station already has a CP to go digital, and a transmitter that can be modified to do so. Our plans are to get up and running with digital on WGSR, then worry about the conversion for the new station. Until the sale is finalized, W18BG will remain a relay for WLXI.

So will you guys be modding the CP to maybe drop that amazingly vicious directional pattern TCT filed for? Before WDBJ-DT signed on, I could view W18BG's video (but not hear it's audio) 24/7...

I would love to see a good All American Standards staton go on. Somebody do it quick! Doris Day, Deano, Al Martino, Mitch Miller, and if you really wanted to rock for the young people, some Pat Boone or something from Cowsills or something or other like that but not too much and more stuff from the forties without saying a whole lot about it!  8) 8) Come on!!! Who's with em??? :D :D :D ;D
Seriously, let me know and I will submit a list to any programmer who wants to do this.)

I believe this is in the wrong thread, therefore you're wrong! ;D

Anything is possible, but we're not going to look into that issue until things process through the FCC. As things stand with the CP, it does the job of covering its COL and hitting the cable head-ends. A lot depends on the engineering data, and what the current owner's reasons were for ordering such a tight directional. The FCC's recently-approved DTS rules will definitely make it easier for us to improve the fringe-area signals.

I'd just been thinking that if the transmitter can be modified, maybe the existing omni-directional antenna could be modified for channel 23 as well, which would further save money. You know, and hopefully put me in the coverage area. ;D

Not very likely, as you would be feeding a higher power level into an inefficient radiator. Not only would that eat us alive in power bills, but would likely cause a higher level of spurious emissions on frequencies above and below 22...not a good idea with all of the stations bunched up on fewer channels.

For maximum power usage and efficiency we're going to have to have a new antenna specifically tuned to radiate on 22. We've got bigger fish to fry right now, so things will stay pretty much the same until we get the channel 47 digital up and going.

BTW...the engineers are telling us to plan for program tests in early May. I'll let you know more as we get going.

I go along with this!

Come down to Charlotte, and at least during the daylight hours, and not in the inner city or too far west, you'll hear just what you want.

Today the FCC approved transfer of W18BG and its associated digital CP to Starnews Corporation.

I don't know when the sale becomes final, but we're doing a little celebrating tonight. Not only is WGSR's DTV antenna up on the tower, but the next chapter in this company's development is just starting.

For those of you who wonder what we will program on the station, I can't say officially. However, our leased-access cable station in Martinsville IS called NewsChannel 18. That might give you a hint.

Can someone please tell me what I'm missing here? Why is there so much interest in this tv station?
Because it's one of the few things LOCAL going on. Following the struggle of a broadcaster is worth watching since we are all in the same boat so to speak. If this was about the Greensboro Times or the Roanoke Rag you might have a point. Some of us might just learn from others and their projects, I guess you won't but some may.

Dang but it's a local story. Not just theoretical, but actually here. On the forum even.
How is it not interesting to a broadcasting person?

Can't pick it up in JAX,,,Whatever happened to the guy that walked in on the News set threating???APE

I've viewed WGSR's "digital" signal and you all with get good coverage into the
Triad, any word on getting placed on cable in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High
Point and other areas?, If this takes place, your station will grow.

Updates and developments . . . . it looks like the signal of W18BG will go dark on June 12th. That's when WDBJ in Roanoke goes full power on their digital signal and gets full access to channel 18.

Later this year we will put up a digital signal on channel 23. We already have the construction permit for it, but time and finances won't allow us to do it in time to meet the June 12th transition.

I'll update everyone when we get a little closer to putting that station together.
