In your opinion what is wrong with "Classic Rock 102.9 MGK" in terms of the playlst and the programming on the station and what can they do to imporve the programming and the playlist on the station? I haven't seen any good opnions posted yet about this station. Its mostly been bad feedback about MGK here on the message boards. That's why I bring this topic up. I also invite the MGK management and the DJ's to also talk about this if they want to.

Re: What is wrong with "Classic Rock 102.9 MGK" (WMGK 102.9 FM)

Although I've only listened a couple of times, I can say it sounds boring and dry, like many other classic rock stations these days.

more led zeppelin more pink floyd, the need to do the a-z at christmas time, thanksgiving block party, they already have a top 500 countdown so i cant say that, they need triple-shot thursday, and 20 song music marathons

and they need to become more classic rock and less classic hits

so basically you are saying they need to sound just like every other classic rock station

WMGK is a very successful Classic Rock station. Some Rock more, some are more Classic hits oriented, but WMGK is one of the market's top rated stations and is very successful financially. Perhaps they make some decisions to protect WMMR, but that is one of the benefits of deregulation. It's a luxury problem at best that GM faces.Would Philadelphia be better served if they were seperately owned and bashing each others brains out?Maybe.
Many a radiophile insider thinks they can better program the tried and true library based stations in this market. But depth equals obscurity. People downplay research because they haven't liked the outcome in the past or were victoms of flawed data. But I have personally sat in on well over 50 music studies in various formats. Deep cuts rarely test. Well done tests and appropriate interpretations of their findings have equalled better programmed stations and higher ratings time and time again. The peeps want the hits. Figure out what they are and play 'em loud and proud.
And let us insiders get ipods, satellite or find ecclectic internet stations that dabble in our particular fancies. But for the masses, play the hits of your target demo and win!!! It ain't brain surgery ,folks.

Really? That's how they would be a better classic rock station? Doesn't WMMR do music marathons (maybe not 20 in a row) everyday? Doesn't/didn't WMMR do A-Z? Doesn't WMMR have double-shot Tuesday? Might as well change the call letters to WNNR.

Why doesn't GM use the heritage that they have with WMMR and make WMGK sort of a classic WMMR? Most of their airstaff is from either WMMR or WYSP. Take more of the classic rock off of WMMR and put it on WMGK. Play some of the older 'MMRchive stuff on 102.9. Concentrate on newer rock on 93.3.

On a side note, it was good to hear DeBella on with Pierre yesterday celebrating Pierre's 25 years. Made me think of the handovers DeBella used to do with Pierre when I was in high school.

I hope GM does the same for John next year for his years in Philly on WMMR, MMGK and for the years, as he put it, when he went over to the dark side on WYSP.

By the way, GM should buy a station down the shore WNNR and put WMMR down there.

The spot breaks are painfully too long. Run an extra stopset. Listeners are not stupid. Thay know that a "40 minute marathon" means a 20 minute stopset!

Re: What is wrong with "Classic Rock 102.9 MGK" (WMGK 102.9 FM) In your opinion

I once worked for a classic rock station up in the Harrisburg market. They were really stuck on 38 Special, Skynyrd and Zeppelin.
When I was listening to ALOT of WMGK last year, I noticed that 'MGK loves Springsteen and Woodstock Era Artists. It seems that Classic rock is somewhat interpreted. They all seem moldy and stale. I don't understand how Andre Gardner can make the same old tired Springsteen songs worth playing, Bruce is beat ( listen to "the Rising" ). It's time for MGK to shelve the woodstock era rock music and give The rolling stones and the pretenders and The Boss a much deserved retirement. Led Zeppelin is soooooooo played out, and to a small degree classic rock stations even play Pink Floyd into the ground. The format itself only really concentrates on specific artists or a small time period. I really never hear artisits like Kiss, Foghat, Zappa, Black sabbath, or Blue Oyster cult on classic rock stations like MGK. If MGK only expanded their playlist to include a bunch more artists that all by itselk=n

f would be an improvement

Dont forget that WMMR is WMGK's sister station...and they don't want to overlap too much.

Re: What is wrong with "Classic Rock 102.9 MGK" (WMGK 102.9 FM) In your opinion

Debello has got to go. bring over Pierre for mornings and then you have a great station with Andre, Debbie, and Ray. The current morning show is SOOOOOO Cheesyyyy. I can not listen to it anymore.

Re: What is wrong with "Classic Rock 102.9 MGK" (WMGK 102.9 FM) In your opinion

MGK and all classic rock stations take the few artists they do play and trim each artist's 10 to 20 year discography down to 3 songs. They'd probably pair it down to less than 3 songs, but I guess you need 3 to play a "Rock Block" or "Triple Shot". And if one of the few artists they do play, is still recording today, they don't play anything new. As far as MGK is concerned, everybody's career ended around 1985.

Is MGK supposed to be a station for people who back in the day listened to MMR and then they grew up? If so, where are the regional classics from Hall & Oates, Southside Johnny, Robert Hazzard, The A's, John Eddy etc.

And beyond the regional classics, are these not classic artists from the heyday of MMR - UFO, Thin Lizzy, Robin Trower, Cream, Rossington-Collins Band, Al Stewart, Molly Hatchett, Outlaws, Uriah Heep, Foghat, Dave Mason, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Humble Pie, Asia and on and on.

If what classic rock stations put on now is the best they can do, then sink the format.

To me this is just gimmick stuff, and a matter of personal taste more than anything else. I would have considered them a "classic rock" station more than a "classic hits" station anyway.

Considering that, for years, one couldn't find classic rock-formatted stations in many cities, the fact that Philly has WMGK is a good thing, even if one would rather hear more Zeppelin than, say, Steely Dan.

As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with WMGK. If I want more eclectic stuff, I'll switch off the radio and switch on Sirius.

I'll e-mail this thread to them.
