What kind of luck have you had with Portland, Oregon AM's?

The last couple of times I was in Seattle (actually Everett) I could not receive KPOJ at night. Instead I heard CKRM Regina fairly strong. Can anyone in Seattle tell me if they ever hear KPOJ at night anymore? Disappointing trying to listen to a Blazer game. The old KGW with only 5kW did a better job reaching Seattle then the 10 kW KPOJ does.

I have heard KXTG 750 not only in Everett, but up on Vancouver Island, near Victoria during the day.

In past years, I've heard KPOJ (then KINK-AM), KXTG (then KXL), and KEX in Las Vegas.

Last year while traveling to San Francisco and LA, I could listen to KEX, KFXX, and KPNW (Eugene) in San Francisco at night. In LA I heard KEX and KPNW. Even in Long Beach I could hear KEX in the null of the Anaheim station. In Northridge, it was 90% KEX.

About 12 years ago, while in Maui,I could hear KXTG (then KXL) taking turns with KFQD Anchorage. KEX, and KPNW Were strong. Also heard KIRO Seattle and 1410 from Vancouver, BC.

W7PAT, KPAM is variable. Some nights it's fairly steady and readable. Other nights the channel is a mess, with KPAM competing with CBC and Deportes (KTRB San Francisco). Its signal is not as strong here in my part of Seattle-land than KXTG 750, KPOJ 620, or KEX 1190.

KEX and KXTG have the most consistent, listenable signals for the most part. KEX often has horrendous QRM from the station in Saskatchewan that is a few hertz off frequency from it.

As for the other 'powerhouses' in Western Oregon, KUGN is listenable once KQNT Spokane is nulled out, KOAC is steady and listenable on 90% or more nights, and KPNW often has a steady, listenable signal, too (some nights it receives interference from KANN Utah).

Thanks boombox4. I am beginning to believe that CFSL in Weyburn, SK doesn't protect KEX at night anymore. We never used to hear out here ( even locally in the null of KEX) until recent years. I have been to Weyburn (family reunion in 1975) and at that time CFSL would sign off at 1AM local time and I was able to log both KEX and WOWO.

Thanks for the other info.

Pat

Can you get KPOJ or KPAM during the day in Seattle? I would imagine that 630 probably blocks KPOJ in most areas.

Propagation is a funny thing. Sometimes we get Seattle on 950 and 1090 at night, other times it's the Mexican stations on those frequencies. Ground wave vs sky wave.

Last night I got a station on 1500 (which is usually silent) with Asian programming, never got a callsign though.

Maybe the 1500 is KSJX from San Jose. I have heard that station a fair amount at night while traveling around the west coast.

690 is another one of those frequencies, in parts of the west coast one night it might be Vancouver, another night Tijuana.

Here is an update:

KEX is non-existent during the day. I drove around the Olympia area and heard nothing but static. This is interesting to me because I would have thought that 1190 would have some life in it that far south. It seems like they sound pretty decent at night, however. KGO 810 sounds crystal clear at night and outperforms KEX by a long shot.

I didn't text KPOJ during the daylight hours, but they seemed pretty rough during the evening drive.

I just decided why KEX doesn't go that far north anymore. They're non-directional in the daytime! I couldn't figure out why you weren't getting them.

W7PAT: RE 630:

It doesn't block anything here where I'm at. I must be in their weak spot. I turn the radio one direction, I can get them most nights. I turn the radio in the other direction, mostly what I hear is KFXD / Fox Sports from Idaho. And sometimes other stations as well.

KCIS isn't that strong in my section of Seattle-land.

Well they certainly sound better at night! With that being said, the signal still is not as impressive as other AM's that are common on the west coast. If I was driving late at night I would imagine that they would sound a lot better.

Same for me. I'm unfortunately close to Vashon, and thankfully KCIS is much further away.

Nothing really comes in as well as it used to. KEX used to be just fine in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and all points between. Their tagline was "from Anchorage to Anaheim".

That's funny because there has been an 1190 in Anaheim for about 55 years.

I think it went "up to" Anaheim when KEZY was 1KW at night. Maybe Gene Autry just had a sense of humor. :)

In March of 2014 my wife and I took a trip to LA area, and in Northridge (where she grew up) you could hear KEX just fine on a portable radio, sometimes battling KEZY (or whatever call it is this week) and sometimes alone. When we stayed aboard the Queen Mary for a couple of nights, on deck I was able to hear KEX in the null of KEZY. We did not go to San Diego on this trip, but I've heard that you can get KEX there sometimes as well. Other stations from the the Northwest heard in LA where KPNW (mixed with other stations) and KOMO (mixed with KECO.
