What local broadcast group is likely to pick up the rights to the new NHL team?

To your point: AM continues to slide in listeners. There will be even fewer AM listeners in a year.

If I were the Kraken front office management, I'd give extra credit to a bidding station being a full-class FM. And no, not some AM with a translator.

That's why 1090 might be a better deal for the team, since iHeart understands that and they see their role as more multi-platform than AM-only.

That's what they did in Phoenix and Oakland.
 
I could see hockey working just fine on 96.5, 95.7, or 102.5, in that order... Possibly but not necessarily with an AM simulcast.
 
The Seattle Kraken (don't care for that nickname, but will move on), are in a very good position for 2021. Sports will be back by then, perhaps even fans in the stadium, and fans will be starved for new competition. The ownership is solid, and I predict nothing but success with this new team. As for broadcast, I agree the amount of avails will be key, but also keeping the rates at a reasonable level. Someone will overbid for sure, but that may not be the best outcome. I am sure this will be a big win for some media company, not sure which at this point. The hockey season generally runs from November to June, so there should not be too much competition, other than later season Seahawks, which in most years would totally make hockey in a weak 2nd place.

I don't think that would be too much of a problem, as there are only a few weeks of overlap with the NHL season. In April, the NHL playoffs are beginning to start, and that coincides with the beginning of baseball season. KTTH is always an option as well if a broadcast needed to be moved, and KIRO-FM wasn't a good alternative.
 
Bump - the Kraken will indeed put 75 games on ROOT Sports NW in 2021-22. They've already hired an out-of-town TV announcer different from the radio voice. The team is negotiating with 710 (Bonneville) and 950 (iHeart) for radio rights.

It will be interesting to see what kind of team the Kraken can put together for their first season. I'm sure there were quite a few NHL owners who didn't like the level of talent they had to expose to Vegas in its expansion draft. Could the Kraken hope to duplicate the Knights' immediate success or will they be more like typical expansion teams -- three years of suck, then improvement to fringe playoff status and beyond?
 
Kraken will open to terrific ratings simply due to being a new professional team in Seattle. How the team advances in year two and three will determine future ratings.
 
It seems likely that KJR 950 is going to announce that they are the official home of the Kraken tomorrow. All of the iheart Seattle stations are teasing the announcement.
 
I hope they also use either 1090 or, even better, an FM simulcast for at least some of the games. Up here in Snohomish County, especially at night, 950's signal isn't great. I now stream the Sounders matches instead of listening on the radio for that reason. I'm betting there are other parts of the greater Seattle area where KJR's signal is weak as well.
