What makes WNNK 104 number 1 in the Harrisburg Market?

I'll agree WNNK 104 has good on air talent, a good traffic reporter and the reception in my area is good but I think the music is much to be desired. I mostly tune them in for the morning and late afternoon traffic. Can they truly be called a Hot AC station? I think they play more older songs and very few currents.

Wink is a Hot AC that is almost a Mainstream AC. They are just a bit more current/recurrent than a mainstream. I believe they position themselves that way so as to leave room for co-owned CHR Hot 92.1. Because they serve as the mainstream AC, they probably garner much in-office listening in the capital city.

Rock Of Hbg is spot on. I would also say the longevity of their airstaff has alot to do with their success. Listeners like familiarity be it music and the air talent. Especially in the adult formats. WINK has always been a promotion machine as well. They positioned themselves in such a way that it would be very difficult for another station to come on and try to grab the AC position.

Hmmmm...maybe the 50000 watt signal has something to do with this too. WRVV is also 50000 watts....Bob94.9 is 50000 but is directional making them a little lesser. Everyone else is 6000 watts or less in the greater Hburg area. Now Wink is a good station programming wise...but with one of the two best signals...anything not in the top two is a disappointment.

Not to mention, I heard an old timer in radio tell me once...."do you know what the best format for a radio station is? Consistency." WINK has been what it has been for decades....along with that 50,000 watt signal that Kevin spoke of, you have a winner.

Remember, non-radio people don't think about radio the way we do. "Is the station playing songs I know?" "Do I know that guy/girl on the radio?" "Can I pick up the station on any radio I use where I want to use it?" Those are the basic questions asked by a listener.

It is consistency. Hollywood has been on since I was a kid. Same thing with Sue Campbell. They have changed with the times musically and they are really the only station around here that has a generation-spanning identity. I'd compare to what WGAL has in local TV. Because I've been watching Ron Martin and Kim Lemon, etc. since I was a kid. I trust their news probably because I trust seeing those same faces year after year.

WINK was probably built with the long term in mind and it's paid off. That's very fortunate because I'm sure other stations have tried to mimic what they have and failed. It would be kind of interesting to see a case study of how they really gained a loyal audience and have maintained it for so long. My guess is the faces, or "voices" of the station have a lot to do with it.

Funny how we've seen other stations within the same cluster piss away on-air talent (namely WTPA) to save money and it never worked. Remember Bob & Tom on WTPA? If you do, you're one of the few.

I guess it's kind of interesting that WINK has been able to both keep their talent and also have talent that wants to stay at the station. It seems WGAL also has that working for them. The stations that are the also-rans of the area don't seem to have that going for them at all.
