What Milwaukee AM radio stations would be good candidates for flipping to progressive/liberal talk (AAR or non-AAR)?

What Milwaukee AM radio stations would be good candidates for flipping to progressive/liberal talk (AAR or non-AAR)?

Hypothetical Question - What Milwaukee AM radio stations are having trouble profit-wise and ratings-wise, and would be good candidates for flipping to progressive/liberal talk?

A Milwaukee Prog/Lib Talk AM Station could have:
* AAR format (Franken, Rhodes, Garafalo, etc).
* Non-AAR format (Ed Schultz, Steph Miller, Bill Press, etc).
* A little of both AAR and non-AAR talk hosts (with some local flavor thrown in).

Based on Tim Cuprisin's article yesterday, WSSP with its' low ratings books might improve its' position if it flipped to progressive/liberal talk.

The CC (& FM) prog/lib talker in not-to-far-away Madison is doing well ratings-wise (and I assume profit-wise, as well) - which bodes well for a prog/lib talker in Milwaukee (in conjunction with past election/voting history).

I recognize that WRJN covers the southern Milwaukee region, but I'm thinking here of something that would be city-wide (and likely metro region-wide).

Anyone else have ideas on who would be good candidates?

I don't think there is much of a market for it in Milwaukee. Not sure. WSSP would be a good canidate (Entercom does own PT1350 in New Orleans) but it won't happen. Entercom is too commited to their sports format on 1250.

WOKY would be a canidate if the ratings weren't as good as they are now.

Doubt WMCS would ever flip. Its possible but the station is too directed tords the African-American community for Air America. However they do run ESPN Radio via leased time from WAUK.

WJYI (They make too much money for AAR)

WRJN (as said but they target Racine/Kenosha)

WBJX (If they ever got sold and got a better signal)

I don't see any of this happening at all. So Progressive Talk fans will probably have to stick with XM 167, WCPT (Covers Kenosha and Walworth Counties decent enough) or if they live on the western areas of Waukesha County they may be able to yank in WXXM.

WRJN ownes the Milwaukee-Racine market rights to Ed Schultz, Alan Colmes and Lionel (as well as Bill O'Reilly.)

Given the public release of the Winter 2006 book - I would like to re-pose the question:Hypothetical Question - What Milwaukee AM radio stations are having trouble profit-wise and ratings-wise, and would be good candidates for flipping to progressive/liberal talk?A Milwaukee Prog/Lib Talk AM Station could have: * AAR format (Franken, Rhodes, Garafalo, etc). * Non-AAR format (Steph Miller, Bill Press, etc). As Don pointed out, WRJN owns the Milwaukee-Racine market rights to Ed Schultz, Alan Colmes and Lionel. * A little of both AAR and non-AAR talk hosts (with some local flavor thrown in). Based on Tim Cuprisin's article a few months ago, WSSP with its' low ratings books might improve its' position if it flipped to progressive/liberal talk. WTMJ.... but only if they keep running Michael Savage.

Don't hold your breath.Air America's founders has said they'll buy (not lease) 25 stations in next 12 months. They're in Illinois. So far, they've got one under contract, in North Little Rock, ARK.And, Madison ratings say that Air America is #7 in the most liberal marketin the Midwest. Not good. But not bad, either for a Class A station nextto the non-commercial band.

wtrw,Do you know: Did the Drobny's lease or purchase the new AAR affiliate in Phoenix? Or were the people there just hoping that they would?

Re: What Milwaukee AM radio stations would be good candidates for flipping to progressive/liberal ta

My opinion on this, ratings doesn't mean everything. Sometimes a station may be rated low, but still bill well. Poses another question, how well does WSSP bill? Anyone know?

Re: What Milwaukee AM radio stations would be good candidates for flipping to progressive/liberal ta

Any AM that's having trouble profit-wise wouldn't want to flip to progressive/liberal talk. There's no profit THERE. Chicago has an AM Oldies station that is struggling to get its ratings to the left of the decimal point. They passed on AAR last summer.

Re: What Milwaukee AM radio stations would be good candidates for flipping to progressive/liberal ta

The Drobny's did LMA the Phoenix station successfully. Mrs. Anita Drobny seemed like a very nice person, with a 'cause' but at the same time we were negotiating, there were trade reports that they'd be losing their NYC flagship... which turned out to be untrue. They also rule by committee, so you'd have one of their Phoenix folks and a consulting broker in the hierarchy. They also LMA with lease to purchase the North Little Rock , AR station. We've talked to them, but it seems they are looking for blowtorch stations, and probably unlikely to find them in the markets they'll need. They would have loved our 10kw proposal at Denmark, covering all of Green Bay, but turned up their noses at our minimal nighttime power...
