What Out of Market stations do you listen to?

I really enjoy listening to radio from other cities. It's nice to not have to be limited to the local area. I recently added two "GE Super Radios" to my collection. One for the living Room and One for The Bedroom. This product is a must have for anyone who wants great reception of out of market stations. You can pick up these radios at Benny's for $50 each or on Amazon.com for even less.

On a typical day I tune into both WCBS and WINS from New York. Sometimes WOR as well. I also tune in WBZ on occasion. Most New York stations come in without a problem both day and Night. The other night I received "WHO Radio" from Des Moines Iowa. That is the furthest station I've been able to receive. Not to bad since the transmitter is almost 1,300 Miles away.

I'm from Boston, but I listen to a lot of the Providence and New Hampshire radio stations because they have better variety.

Btw, Skynet, if you don't mind me asking, where exactly do you live? Because I've seen you post in the New England TV forum that you watch both Boston and Providence channels. But nowadays, I believe Cox cable in Rhode Island strictly carries the Providence channels, and Comcast (in most areas) strictly carries the Boston channels. So, how exactly do you get to watch both?

My furthest AM snag was KSL (1160?) from Salt Lake City, in 1976

Martin,
You're right. KSL is on 1160. I'd hear them at night in my hometown of Coventry after the then-WJJD in Chicago would leave the air. My two greatest catches were XEX-730 in Mexico City in the null of of CKAC Montreal when I lived in Providence. 150 kW on a clear channel goes a long way. The other and perhaps longest, is Radio Vision Cristiana
on 530 kHz from South Caicos Turks and Caicos Islands in the British West Indies. The were audible like a local in downtown Providence at night on a Sony Walkman. 50 kW on this frequency really gets out over a salt water path.

Dave,

I also used to pick up "Radio Bonaire (sp?)", from the Netherlands Antiles, on 800.

Martin,

I too, heard Trans World Radio from Bonaire in the Netherlands Antilles. When I heard them years ago. they ran 500 kW and would be in a dogfight with CKLW every evening. Their callsign was PJB.

It would be awsome to get some Los Angeles stations on the East Coast. I've tried to get KFI before. But I guess that's just a little to far. The Signal can't make it over all those mountains. Thank God for streaming. But as we all know, it's not quite as exciting as being able to snag the signal out of the air.

Im in the Boston Area...but I listen to Hot 106 and fun 107 and Sports Radio WEEI 103.7 FM and WHJY . sometime I listen to WFAN AM-660 NYC .

KFI has been heard on the East Coast. It's a bit trickier now due to other stations on 640, such as WOI in Iowa, WHLO in Ohio, along with WNNZ in Springfield. Here in the Philly area we have WWJZ on 640, doing Radio Disney with 50 kW day, 950watts at night. KFI itself is running only 25 kW from a short auxiliary tower after a private plane crashed into its 750' main tower and brought it down. Word it that the governmental maze has been successfully negotiated and a new tower will be built, allowing KFI to return to 50 kW power.
