What should be Fly 92.9's new calls or should WGTZ stay?

I think a good one would be WDFL, which would stand for Dayton's Fly. I definately think the WGTZ calls need to be retired, or moved to 102.9 IF they move it CHR(Which I bet will happen). Z103 sounds MIGHTY GOOD to me!

I don't understand why these variety hits stations aren't promoted as a "continuation" of a previous CHR. Thus, they should have just kept calling it Z-93.

Then again, I think the whole format is just being used as an excuse in most markets to fire DJ's. I'd like to have a good variety hits station with DJ's.

DJs may well come eventually. It took Indy's jack about a year to bring on an afternoon driver. Call letters with a derivitive of "fly" wouldn't work.

Some "adult hits" stations do have jocks....

However, most still take a "music's the star" approach even if jocks are on the air with the music. It is not intended to be a personality-driven format.

How about WEDS(Eaton,Dayton,Springfield)provided of course the calls haven't already been taken.

Why would they blow up Z93 only to move it to 102.9. Just the concept of this is silly.

WDHT and WROU are both doing very well and Main Line owns the Urban audience - no reason to mess with it.

There wasn't room for top 40 stations in Dayton and that's why there is now only one. End of story.

The problem, if what has been stated on this board is correct: ratings notwithstanding, WDHT and WROU are not making the money they need to make. (This is not altogether uncommon with some Urban formatted stations. Not all, but some.)

You have to get ratings, and produce the revenue that the ratings should get you. If not, ratings alone won't save you. Again remember here: this isn't about "art" or "music". It's about "audience" and "profit" and "business".

The Top 40 market is ripe for the pickings, with that position currently owned by a peashooter that can't upgrade its' signal, also one who is apparently soon to be on the selling block.

You could, potentially, make more money with 102.9 by, not blowing it up at all, but "tweaking" to make it's target more mainstream, with the additional revenue that would bring. I'm not sure a "Z-103" is the answer, but an "All Hits - Hot 102-9" maybe. We'll see. It's an interesting theory, anyway.

If that was the case, why not flip 102.9 to Adult Hits and tweak Z93? No, a Rhythmic station does not power ratio what a good top 40 does. But 102.9 can benefit from Z93 going away and maybe get some younger end. There was no room for four 18-34 stations in Dayton (WGTZ, WXEG, Channel, and Hot). Now there will be three - which is more than a lot of medium markets.

New York, L.A., and Chicago don't have two top 40's (because they can't support them). Dayton sure doesn't need two. Clear Channel used 94.5 as a flanker and that's what it was.

Main Line made a great move and should absolutely see their market share grow.

It's a good excuse to take underperforming stations and put them into a format that delivers great 25-54 numbers and makes them profitable.

Why didn't Mainlline mold Z93 into a Hot AC like a Q102 or even a WARM 98? I think that could've worked in the Dayton market or I am wrong?

Dayton needs a Top/40 Main Stream. Channel 945 is just to rhythmic...and well we have HOT 102.9 for Rhythmic.

My guess is CC will shift WDKF more mainstream with WGTZ gone.

On to the other question about Hot AC, There's already Mix and Lite. Adult Hits can drive 75% of their cume comp in the 25-54 cell. It can be cheap to run (no jocks) and has a broader mix of music.

I'd do Adult Hits before Hot AC in heartbeat.

Now, I do think that would be a great idea!
