What station/format of Bakersfield radio past would you like to see back?

There are lots of choices here...
KKXX of the early 90s...was a powerhouse of a station that got national attention.
But it is not my choice.
Q94 of long long ago...not my choice though.
KKXX Rock n Stereo...anybody remember the old TV commercial? Not my choice though.
13K...was a great AM. not my choice though.

I think my choice would be Kick Ass Magic 98. I really enjoyed the station and the music...and the fact they had Kick Ass in there logo!

Q94 FM-Hits happening' right on Q (cue)

The old Klly, before EJ started programming.EJ is great as a programmer and Klly is a good station but I liked it in the late 80's early 90's.

I remember KKXX 108!

How about a FULLTIME COMMERCIAL BASED CLASSICAL MUSIC STAION like the old KIWI-92.1 before they turned SPANISH or KTSJ-1050. ;)

I'll second the vote for "Magic 98", the former KMGN-FM. They lived up to their "Kick Ass" reputation. If recollection serves me, they dished up some serious new-wave and truly alternative music that was slightly ahead of its time (for Bakersfield, anyway.) They seemed to have an edgy attitude and just enough arrogance/cockiness to convince you how they were so much "cooler" than the other established FMs (KKXX/Q-94, etc.)
Although I was just a teen myself in that station's heyday, my older sister dated one of the jocks, who was one of the several DJ's that became known for their drunken on-air antics. I often heard rumors and tales of those tirades and how they were responsible for the station either being fined or having lost their license altogether. (If anyone cares to verify?) Ahhhh the glory days!

Of course, on the pre-FM era, my vote would go to KAFY-AM 55, the classic rock/pop powerhouse of its time.

Honorable mentions: Would welcome the return of stations that play Jazz (real Jazz, not just the "smooth" variety), Blues, and classical.

Bonus: to any station, regardless of format, that would return the L.A.-based Mark & Brian morning show to our local airwaves. Mornings have never been the same since they were last broadcast here some years back.

I have fond memories of KMGN Shafter. I stuck one of their Kick Ass bumperstickers on my Dad's car. He was a corporate banker and was the butt of jokes around the office because of it. Everyone called him Kick Ass Harold ;D

The music was pretty diverse if I remember. Jocks played really deep album cuts that really haven't been heard on Bakersfield radio since Magic 98 went dark. It was a fairly renegade station by Bakersfield standards. Too bad those days are over because if there is anything Bakersfield needs is a kick in the pants in the excitement department.

I'm going to cheat a little and put my vote in for 107.5 KZZF Fresno AKA Z-Rock. While not a Bakersfield station, 107.5 had (maybe still does, isn't it Spanish now?) pretty good reception in East Bako and the Z-Rock format (Hard Rock/Metal) was right up my alley during the late 80's. The hard rock format wouldn't work today of course, it's still an enjoyed format that still has life via the internet through sites like KNAC.Com and KQLZ.Org

"Kick ass Harold" Is this Lori Scott? Mike Scott's wife?

Your dad Harold Hansen?

That was the best post I have read.If your dad did that,(Hansen or not) that really is kick ass.Especially at a bank.

I am still laughing. He must be a cool father.

Oops, I forgot my sister did radio in Bako and some of you guys are still bumping around town :D Yeah, that's my pop. City councilman and all nowadays. Lori and Mike last I heard are in Saginaw, Michigan. I'd know more than that if that jerk sister of mine ever called me once in awhile :)

Hot talk, Mike O'meara, Adam Carolla, Mark and Bryan, Don Imus anyone! Phil Hendrie is nice but I could listen all day. Too much side stuff on Scott Cox now, not like I should be listening to news/talk during morning drive!

Adam Carolla is on KFRR 104.1 and Mark and Bryan is on KIOO 99.7,even though these stations are from Tulare County ,I know there signal can be recieved in Kern County.

In 1979 the best stations were KKXX 108,97.7 I think the call letters were KLYD ,and the Original KBOS 94.9 when they were THE BOSS,and on Blueridre Mt.I was in Bakersfield a lot back then.

I remember about 1979 or 1980, KKDJ 106 (Fresno) with The Dean and Don Show and the Breakfast Club. That was pretty funny. What ever happened to those guys?

Last I heard Dean Opperman and Don Fisher were doing a morning show on a talk station in Santa Barbara, this was a couple of years a go.They were carried on KFPT 790 for a week and were cancelled with no explanation.Does anybody remember this and why they were cancelled? I do remember they made negative comments about big radio companies buying out the Ma and Pa stations with referance to CBS at the time who bought KKDJ and they were let go at that time .Accourse KFPT was owned by CBS at that time.

TO my Original post it was for Bakersfield ,not Fresno. For Fresno stations KCLQ 107.5 which started with Dean and Don for about a year ,then went to KFYE 93.7 (Y 94) for a while ,before going back to KKDJ. Other past Fresno stations would be KZZF 107.5 (Z-ROCK) (90-91) ,The Original KYNO 1300 and 95.5(Rock 96fm) and KFYE 93.7 (Y 94),and KFIG in the early 70's.

Personally I would LOVE to see "Classic Country" and or Alt. Country make an appearance in Bakersfield. maybe Buck Owens' spirit would kiss the station to the top with some divine intervention. ;D

The Owens family already has KCWR running the satellite Real Country, which was originally a partnership between Owens and ABC, and is about as close to "classic country" as you're going to get, given the demographics. It's not exactly setting the market on fire, although it does better than KBKO did.

So can KMJ. Guess it's stupid for KNZR to air Rush Limbaugh and Coast to Coast. KERN should replace Sean Hannity and fire Inga Barks, cause she's on in Fresno.

103.9 bleeds over 104.1 bad, seems like it got worse.

I would love that too. I would rather tune in KJUG am 1270 than listen to KCW. KJUG is another station that comes in alot better in Bakersfield than 104.1 or 99.7

yeah, a true classic country station would be great. I know that I would listen a lot.
One my dreams is to host a sunday night rockabilly show on KUZZ...it would be huge.

Come on Lotus you know you want to Do XFACTOR again and Freeny can come back and do the house show after the Baka Boys again.. Come on man you know we had fun... LOL I have some XFACTOR TAPES SOME WHERE...
