What was the longest distance DX you have heard on AM or LW?

How's THIS for a good catch.

Found it on You Tube.

Gosh, all that expensive equipment just to hear a 40-year old record, "Daydream Believer". This is why I have no use for DX anymore. There's nothing interesting to hear. Used to be I could pull in regional hits, regional programs (like barn dances, polka shows, or esoteric talkshows) but no more. It's now either syndie or stuff I can hear in much better fidelity right here at home.

Also, is 1700 such a good catch? It's practically a clear channel. Hearing KWG from Stockton on 1230, now that would be a good catch, I feel.

I guess it all depends on how you look at it. It's not the content but the thrill of hearing a hard to get station thousands of miles away.
My feelings, exactly.
When I was a teen and in my twenties, I did take pleasure in hearing the top 40 stations and the unique programming from distant cities; but DXing was was separate from that for me, and still is today. I get a kick out of catching a KGOW in Belleaire, Texas who happenend to have left their 50 KW transmitter and daytime directional pattern on all night; or a graveyard station jump out of the jumble for a few seconds and ID themselves.

Whatever night 1560 (The Game as it's known locally) left their daytime rig on must have been a fun one for DXers. I'm guessing that signal carries a good way, and as a side note it'd be a rare Houston catch to our north since almost all our AMs direct out toward the Gulf at sundown.

My farthest shortwave utility DX was a station on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. I'd have to look up the frequency, and, it might have even been CW ("Morse Code").

From Salt Lake City, Utah to Reunion is 10,900 miles. But, even more memorable were the call letters of this French Navy communications station: FUX. ;D

Yes, I DO have a QSL card.

I'd have held out for a bumper sticker! ;D

From North America:

1179 Radio Sweden Intl (from Halifax NS)

820 WBAP Dallas/Fort Worth TX (from Ottawa ON, also picked up in Vancouver BC)

800 TWR Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles (from Ottawa ON)

Can I throw an FM in there? 88.5 WQOX Memphis TN (from Sudbury ON - 800mi)

Wish I kept more accurate lists while in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. :(

More logs

WCKY Cincy, OH at 1965 miles
KSTP St. Paul, MN (nearly 1400 miles)
XEPE Tecate, Baja California North (over 1000 miles)
WQBV569 Union Gap, WA (about 110 miles) Great distance for a 10 watt TIS!!! :) :)

Tentatives
XEROK Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua (1384 miles)
NWR HAR Tri Cities, WA (about 180 miles)

Nice catches all. I'm guessing WCKY was before they went to their night pattern (sunset at KFBK). The night pattern throws a decent amount of juice to the NW, but not the full 50kw.

Didn't you also report getting WBBM during a Bears game?

yeah, I did.

WBBM Chicago, IL at 1727 miles (logged around 8:30PM during a Bears game)

Tough to get WBBM out west now. On my recent trip to Salt Lake, I picked up KCEG Pueblo during critical hours and a weak KKOH in and out of static every night. Not a trace of WBBM on my E5.

In fact, all of the Chicago big boys are ruined out west now. WLS is obliterated by KDXU, WGN is knocked out by KDWN, and WSCR gets knocked off by a weak KBOI. WMVP is, of course, directional - so you get KOMO quite well.

Since I mentioned WMVP, I can report weak but steady nighttime reception of it from the Quad Cities last night. The biggest surprise dxing from there was picking up a very strong CKOC 1150 Hamilton. At times, it was almost as strong as local KJOC 1170. Even 170 miles west of WBBM's transmitters, it's IHASH knocks out WABC during all but the strongest of fade ins. That technology is an appalling menace. Other New Yorkers (WCBS, WFAN) came in quite well after dark.

Also, KOKC was in steady for much of the evening. Much better than it is around Chicago. The aforementioned local on 1170 did not permit reception of KSL.

In the good 'ole days you could get all 4 of the Chicago ND clears out west easily. WLS came in the best during my travels in the 60s & 70s.
I'm told you can still hear WBBM occasionally near Phoenix in winter.

CKOC was sounding like a local in Central Michigan last week. A couple of days before that, they were sounding stronger than normal (daytime) northeast side of Toronto (York Mills and Leslie). I was wondering if their DA might be out of whack....not that I minded! :)

Agreed!! :D

I certainly didn't mind listening to them either - they were playing some great stuff! Something is up with them because I don't recall ever pulling them in quite so strongly here in the US.

Not my situation here in Northern Illinois, instead WHBY has been booming in on 1150 with their 25kW night power. I checked with the CRTC website and their are no technical changes to CKOC, so perhaps they were out of tolerance. The 1540 out of Toronto, CHIN, has been coming in better and interfering quite a bit with KXEL.

WHBY indeed was "top dog" on 1150 before dawn here in Northern Illinois yesterday....with CKOC nowhere to be found. Perhaps CKOC's pattern and WHBY's new little blowtorch are both working properly now.

Indeed CKOC is a good listen. Heavy use of voice tracking notwithstanding. Its my "default" a.m. preset on my biz trips to Toronto every 2-3 months. Odd, however, to hear the lady doing morning drive traffic on sister station CHAM also pulling an evening "airshift" on CKOC.

I gave DXing a shot last night . . . I live in Erie, Pennsylvania. I received all the Pittsburgh stations loud and clear. I received WLW in Cincinnati very well. I picked up a station in Delaware and one in Norfolk Virginia -- I don't know the call letters but they did mention the city.

Welcome to the world of DX. Erie is a good place to DX....with stations from the East Coast, Midwest, and Canada all easy catches....as well as parts of the south. Try for New York and Chicago. NY on 660, 710, 770, 880, 1130, and 1560 for openers. Chicago on 670, 720, 780, 890, and 1000. Happy hunting!

Mine would be KFI from LA, making it all the way to north AL, maybe two weeks before their tower got knocked down, somehow getting around the splash from WSM
