What were most popular radio stations in 1967?

Need your help. What were the most popular radio stations around 1967 in Texas?
I am trying to find airchecks from May to August of 1967 that may have contained
the zany slurpee ads from 7-Eleven. Their home base is in Texas, so I assume stations in that
area carried the commercials. I lived in Balt-Wash area and they played them quite
frequently. Unfortunately, there are no airchecks from that time period. I have listened
to countless airchecks from other areas around the Country during that time span,
but no slurpee ads. The product was in it's early distribution, and apparently the ads
were confined to certain areas only. I appreciate your help!

In Dallas, KLIF 1190 was the big deal in top 40, but they got a good run from KBOX 1470. KFJZ was the big deal in Ft. Worth. By 1967, Dallas was heavy into FM and stations like KVIL, KIXL and KMAP were making some in-roads in the area of Easy Listening/Beautiful Music. I'm not sure if KBOX FM was on the air by then, but if not, It was soon after. It was probably 1968. They were an upbeat MOR station playing lots of Tijuana Brass, Al Hirt, etc. They got quite a following for a while in North Dallas.

In East Texas, the big stations for top 40 were KDOK and KLUE, as I recall.

AAh yes the 12oz Slurpee and don't forget the Big Wheel :D

Thanks Chuck for that feedback on stations. Anybody know where I might find airchecks from KLIF or KBOX?
I found an old link to Steve Eberhart's website for KLIF, but it's gone now.
I have listened to some WLS airchecks, but they were bare of 7 eleven.
What about KILT? Was that a popular station at that time?
Thanks.

KILT was the Houston equivalent of KLIF, also owned by Gordon McLendon.

Do a Google search for "Dallas Radio Archive." I don't have the site bookmarked but I think it has lots of stuff you will find interesting. There is also a historical radio links page on http://www.chalkhillmedia.org/Museum/ The link may be on there. You have to scroll down the page to find the links.

Maybe some of that will help.

Popular stations in Dallas- Ft.Worth were KLIF( McLendon),KBOX,KXOL, KFJZ
In San Antonio they were : KONO,KTSA( McLendon..he couldn't beat KONO in this market), KBAT,WOAI,KITE,KBER

Thanks to everybody for their help. Unfortunately I've only found 1 aircheck
from these stations from 1967 and it's March, not in the May-August summer
months when the commercials aired. If anybody is thinking "how can he remember
when they played 40 years ago?" My memory is not that good. :'(
I had airchecks on reel to reel tape with all the commercials and they were dated. I lost the
tapes in a fire, but the list of contents was in another house and survived.
It's possible the commercials aired in September and I just didn't record
them because I had them all already, but I think they stopped when school started.
Not sure where to look next. If anybody discovers a 1967 aircheck with one of them
on it, please reply to these posts. Thanks again.

Many thanks HRHWEBMASTER. Excellent site. Had several airchecks during the Summer of '67,
but no 7-Eleven commercials. Enjoyed hearing the airchecks nonetheless.
If anybody has more websites with 1967 airchecks from Texas stations, please post them.
Thanks :)
