What would WFAN do in the mornings if they had to let Imus go?

Hold on, Rob. We're not that sure Imus is going anywhere yet. Too early to tell. He just might end up not being simulcast on MSNBC. It's not like Limbaugh who said something offensive on a mainstream sports network and got fired. Had Limbaugh's comment been just a simulcast of his regular show, he'd only be off the simulcast and still be on his original show. Remember these guys are speaking to THEIR audiences who usually will support their host's comments and errors. Limbaugh's sports program and Imus' show get outside of the "listener support zone" and that's where the problem lies.

I don't support what Imus said, but you have to remember that the airwaves are filled with angry white guys who blurt out, as "Kramer" said, what's lies buried inside. Many conservative hosts you hear on the radio today will no doubt talk about every black rant they can remember and say, "so what's the big deal?", completley forgetting what the young women of Rutgers might be feeling today being thrust into the world-wide limelight about their hair, vs. their game. Greaseman is still around after his rant in Washington (but you really take a chance being in mostly-black D.C. saying something like what he did). But in the end, everyone gets over it enough for these guys to resume/continue their careers. Even "Kramer" will be back. He's still making big "Seinfeld" money and soon you will see him on TV or even hear him on the radio. We live in an increasingly anti-black society and many conservative on-air radio talk hosts have those private thoughts held inside, as you can hear when they respond to anything a black person has to say that irritates them. They're actually saying what Imus said but are smarter and bury it within safer rhetoric if you really listen. Like it or not, angry white men will prevail. Let's all get over this and move on. It will happen again.

Clear Channel dumped Stern for something one of his caller's said.

The Greaseman was dumped for saying "why don't we shoot four more and take the whole week off", in referring to MLK day!

Did Imus cross the line with his "nappy headed ho's" comment? Truth is, you find offensive lyrics said about women and African-Americans on so called "Urban" radio everyday. Nobody seems to care about that however.

Ludicris had a huge radio hit called with the hook, "I've got ho's... in different area codes.".
Trick Daddy had a hit called, "You don't know Nann N-word."
Jay Z had a hit called, "Is that yo B*tch?"
Kanye had a hit called, "Goldigger" where the N-Word is repeated ad nauseum.
And the so-called "Whisper Song" by the Yin Yang Twins is just straight up audio porn!
These were all huge radio hits!

Why is Imus being singled out? Is there a double standard?

It is IMUS. Is this the first time he's said something 'shocking'? No. Is there something wrong with what he said? Maybe. Should we be losing our hair over something that isn't news? No! It's the same deal with Stern. If you don't like the program, turn the station. If you were listening, and were really offended by what he said, it's your own fault for having Imus on. You have to be a mental retard to not expect something like this to happen on Imus's show. He's only been a popular talk show host since the 70s. Flipping through the dial on the mornings, if you hit 660, there MIGHT be something that will push peoples' buttons mentioned. Turn on Mix 102.7 and fall back asleep if you really have a problem. :)

I'm not saying whether or not he should be let go, I'm just asking what people think WFAN would do if they had to replace him?

Go, Go, It's not if, its when is his last day. Not only was this an offensive racist comment, but to put a statement like that on young people is just criminal. When you insult young people, especially ones that are out the working their butts off, its a crime!

Anybody that is paid what he's paid knows the consequences when they cross that line. Its not like it has never been done before. He knew what would happen if he did. Now let him pay, and I mean pay dearly!

Double standard , lets see, If you call your child Fat and Lazy , Its Ok . Its your child , But If I called your child Fat and lazy , You may most likely want to Punch my face in . Alot of Ladies ( That I know ) called each other the B word , but if a man called them that , its Sexual Harrassment Time . Alot of Gay American call each other F and Q But if you are not Gay ,and you say those words, You will get label as a Gay Basher . Imus been the radio for a long time , He should know when he cross that line . Its Time to Fire the Old man.

I have a feeling this guy will die on the air-like Jack Spector. He'll slump over the console.

Don't quit him yet, MSNBC. That's good youtube material.

Well, I would not call my child "fat and lazy" but I get your point.

Chris,

In reference to Grease's MLK Day comment, he was suspended. He was fired more than a decade later for referring to the brutal murder of James Byrd on his segment rejoiner.

When the show producer played a Lauren Hill tune as a bumper, Grease made mention of the 7-time Grammy nominee and blurted out "no wonder people drag them behind trucks".

A colossal "speak before you think" moment that cost him millions of dollars.

Will Imus' comments cost him his job? I don't think so, but, he's going to have to do more than a few mea culpas to start any repair of his image.

We're seeing him self-destruct in front of our eyes. His interview on Al Sharpton's show didn't go well. He should have hired a spin-doctor before saying a word. Take the shovel away from him. That ditch is getting deeper and deeper. My prediction, he is toast. He can't recover from this this. He has to go.

OOh come on now,........Is there something wrong with what he said? "MAYBE"?............Listen, while Imus may be sort of a grandatherly old figure to some of you let me spell it out with no ambiguity. "Jiggaboo" is essentially a synonum for "******", they do not necessarily hold the same weight because "Jiggaboo" is a word only used by the oldest of the generation, it's essentially passe, yet it's meaning still holds true. IF Imus knows this (which he does, sayw hat you want he is not a stupid man) then he's the racist that many see him as. If he did not know this then he was even more stupid to reference a word that he was unshure of theexact meaning of, however there is no doubt that he knew that it is derogatory.

He blew it, please stop trying to spin it here.

Care to describe what transpired during the interview?

Just a guess, with the idea of staying on the actual thread of what would WFAN do, but I think they would lean more toward an all-sports approach and see how it flies. This time of the year we have the Yankees expected to be in contention, a great start by the Mets, the upcoming NFL draft, and the basketball and hockey playoffs getting underway.

I could see a known sports host, who is knowledgeable and flexible with non-sports topics, being called in to pinch hit and see how it flies. Someone like Bob Costas would be a perfect fit, or an established local reporter such as Len Berman. They could also dig into the CBS resources, such as a Jim Nantz or Dick Enberg.

Really? Kramer, Greaseman, Imus, and hip hop artists = conservative talk show hosts? Name a conservative talk show host who was thrown off the air for anti-black slurs? Glad you don't have an axe to grind against white male talk show hosts.

Great post, a lot of good insight...

I'm from the old school; I don't go for the shock jock stuff and Imus was one of the first on WNBC. He still spews garbage but he seems to have mellowed. Was he wrong for what he said?? I think so. Will he be fired?? I think the allmighty buck will win here as he brings in a lot of revenue.

Sharpton the charlatan has called for his firing. I think that the worst case scenario would be that Imus would be fired and Not so Sharp-ton would claim a victory like " I won, they listened to me"...I'm from upstate NY, and Sharpton and his cronies are so stupid they don't even know when they have been beaten. 2 words, Tawana Brawley. He claims he still thinks she was telling the truth and the whole thing was proven to be aa sham in a court of law. Civil rights activist?? I don't think so...

Sorry this is slightly off topic. My opinion. Fire away...... :)
