What year did Wide World of Sports switch from 5:00 to 4:30

When did "Wide World of Sports" switch from the 5:00 timeslot to 4:30? Was this when ABC started their Saturday night newscast with Kathleen Sullivan?

Did Wide World of Sports even have a set weekly time? It seems I remember it all over the clock, but memory may not serve me correctly.

Your correct; cause my grandmother once told me of watching a college football game(can't remember who the two teams were), and then watching the World Gymnastics Championships, both live on ABC, and the interesting part was while the football game ended in a tie(on a field goal at the end of the game), the gymnastics event featured something unusual in that two Americans won gold medals, Kurt Thomas and Marcia Frederick. I think that Wide World stopped airing in the fall starting in 1984.

When CBS got into the CFB game in 82, it meant that "Wide World" aired at 5:00 one week, then ABC would have a late CFB game the next week. On some of the old listings i had, ABC had a game starting at 12 P.M. PDT while the other games started at 12:30 P.M. EDT. Maybe it was because of the cartoons, but you'd think they could have aired the cartoons earlier out west.

"Wide World" occupied the 5 pm ET/4 pm CT slot for a long time in the 60s. Even then it was subject to change, but not as often it seemed. Prior to 1984, the NCAA only allowed regional college football broadcasts during 5 specified weeks of the regular season, along with eight nationally broadcast games.

My guess is that Wide World aired on those 5 specified weeks of the regular season, with doubleheaders airing for the eight nationally broadcast games. If my grandmom claimed she saw the World Gymnastics Championships live, it would have been on a regional week, when ABC's game started at 1:30 P.M. EDT.

Once CBS got into airing CFB, they changed the rules to allow more regional weeks. So, Wide World's scheduling changed to every other week.
