Are they starting in January or what?? I can't seem to find much information unlike CBS
EJ204 said:So if CBS launched January 1, why is NBC Sports waiting till April for a fulltime schedule? Doesn't that put them at a bad disadvantage in lining up affiliates? In fact, other than an AM station in Boston, 1510 WUFC, I don't know of any NBC affiliates so far. WUFC is using Yahoo Sports to fill in the gaps till the 24 hour NBC schedule kicks in
I know it takes some time to put together a line-up and staff. But NBC knew they were starting their radio network the same time CBS did. They announced within a couple of weeks of each other this past summer. Both networks have cable and broadcast TV operations to draw on.
NBC is also at a disadvantage in getting affiliates because they don't own any radio stations. CBS had quite a few underperforming AM stations in big markets to use... Houston, Philadelphia, DC, Detroit, Charlotte, Seattle, Baltimore, Tampa. Also all the locally programmed CBS Sports stations will use the network overnight and some weekend hours (except NYC). And all of Cumulus's Sports stations have also taken CBS Sports since Cumulus is a partner in this venture.
Meanwhile Fox Sports owns no stations of its own but has a deal where nearly all Clear Channel Sports stations run the Fox network some hours of the day, and around the clock in smaller markets.
I'm not sure how NBC is going to find enough affilates to make the effort worthwhile. And I'm really not sure what becomes of the fifth network, Yahoo Sports. Who'll want to run them if ESPN, Fox, CBS and NBC are all courting potential affiliates?
