Superbowl ads are the greatest thing!
I don't even care about the game! I just want to see the ads!!!!
(THE AMERICAN ADS!)

Genius marketing is the fascination with Super Bowl commercials. At one time, I don't know, perhaps 15-20 years ago, the press made a big deal of how expensive these spots were during the the game. This generated more interest over the years, and it didn't take long for advertisers to realize that this was their biggest exposure of the year. Hence, many advertisers tried to out-do each other to stand out. The result today is that a significant percentage of viewers watch mostly for the commercials. While most viewers consider commercials as negatives, the Super Bowl has managed to make them a part of the attraction. It's a great platform, and it started with media-hype a couple of decades ago.

Yeah it's not so much about fascination with the Super Bowl commercials themselves as it is about the hype that's built up over the years. People seem to like to have shared experience things to talk about [formerly referred to as "water cooler talk" when people were employed], and the Super Bowl and its commercials is one that everyone can get on board with.

It might also be that in most years the games are a dud and people started paying closer attention to the ads. Companies realizing this started putting more into the spots.

More what? I say more money! How much is one 30 second spot going for this year?

More effort and production costs. More originality, less running a spot that was debuted in October.

Perhaps the ads weren't so good, but Super Bowl XLIV on CBS sure was! The viewership number more than proved that.

I actually have Super Bowl XXI (1987) to Super Bowl XLIV (2010) in my collection, whether dubbed onto a DVD from an older VHS tape or recorded live onto a DVD directly (the last two years). I have many of the commercials from the last few. However, I have none of the ads from the first couple I recorded. I cut out halftime on any of the tapes that had them (except for the clip of Janet Jackson from Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004 of course!).

If I am home for the game, I plan to record most everything from kickoff to game's end, but will not record halftime. I usually record the anthem and the coin toss stuff, but I don't keep the commercials before the kickoff.

Luckily for me, the transmitter of WTIC-DT (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford is within 5 miles and is always 85 to 90% on the signal meter here. Nice to have that as a backup, should the cable screw up.

I can't wait to start counting the number of ads with talking animals during this year's Super Bowl!

That ad with Burt Reynolds from a few years back - I believe it was for FedEx - mocking every single stereotype of most Super Bowl ads - that told it like it is.

By the way, "Funniest NFL Commercials" airing right now - on NFL Network.

I finally saw the special with the top commercials this year. Last year, I forgot to tell TiVo to save it when I couldn't find time to watch, or at least I didn't realize it was ready to be delted. The year before that I think I taped it on VHS and taped over it.

And even though I'm sure I saw all of last year's, I didn't recognize most of the ones they showed. Same for 2009.

There's one commercial I missed one year, with Macy's Parade balloons, that I've never seen. I went to the kitchen or somewhere during the game (not realizing they would go back to commercials so soon) and when I came back I just saw the tail end.

I hated the winning commercial and it should not have repeated or even won once.
