Wheel of Fortune's Pat Sajak Recovering From Emergency Surgery;

https://people.com/tv/wheel-of-fortune-pat-sajak-emergency-surgery/

Longtime Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak, 73, has had to undergo emergency surgery for a blocked intestine, the show’s reps tell PEOPLE.

While the longtime host is expected to be fine, Thursday’s taping of the show, which is now in its 37th season, was canceled.

“The Wheel of Fortune taping on Thursday was canceled because host Pat Sajak underwent successful emergency surgery to correct a blocked intestine,” the show posted to its social media channels. “He is resting comfortably and looking forward to getting back to work. Taping resumed today as scheduled, and Vanna White has stepped in a host.”

Hope for the best for Sajak.

I've never seen a show where Vanna did the hosting.. who turned on the letters, did vanna's job as hostess?

It's being reported that, since they're taping a couple of Disney-sponsored weeks, the Disneyland Minnie Mouse mascot (possibly in rotation with Mickey, Goofy, Donald, and Pluto) will be taking care of the letters.

This isn't the first time Vanna's hosted, technically. In a 1996 episode, Pat came down with laryngitis, so for the Bonus Round, Vanna hosted and Pat turned the letters.

I do remember someone else hosting in the 90s. Maybe it was the daytime show on NBC? I believe that Bob Goen did the daytime show then.

Correct. Rolf Benirschke took over the daytime show in 1989, then Bob Goen shortly after that until it was cancelled in 1991. Vanna's had subs a couple of times in the 80s plus a "Vanna for a Day" contest in 2011, but this will be the first time anyone other than Pat has ever hosted a full episode of the syndicated version since Alex Trebek hosted as an April Fools joke in 1997.

I bet if Alex were in good health, they would have had him cover for Pat instead. He even covered for Chuck Woolery at least once in 1980. But I'm excited to see Vanna host the actual show. She used to play host in the many Wheel video and computer games up until the 2010's, as Pat refused to be involved with them at the time.

And before Pat and Vanna, Wheel was helmed by Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford.

Perhaps because releasing her would have caused a needless issue with the audience. No longer being needed from a practical standpoint doesn't make her less a part of the fabric of the show as currently constituted.

Should be interesting seeing Vanna host the show. I'll definitely have to watch. She should be decent hosting the show. Maybe luck will be with her and we'll see someone win $100,000 and trigger the now-dusty confetti machine ;-)

For those who don't remember Rolf Benirschke was the field goal kicker for the San Diego Chargers
from 1978-86. Wheel was his only foray into television.

Nope, but he did leave the show in '82 after having a raise request turned down. Before Chuck, Edd Byrnes ("Kookie" on 77 Sunset Strip) tried out as host when the show was in development, but Merv Griffin said "don't call us, we'll call you" when he saw him toasted backstage trying to recite the alphabet.

Word on Pat is that he reports the worst has passed and he'll be back on board with Wheel after he gets out of the hospital in a day or two.

Prayers go out to Pat for a speedy recovery.......

Sad to see these great game show hosts getting older like us.Its a part of life........

Pete.

The episodes with Vanna hosting begin airing tonight. She will host for the next two weeks, then Dec 23-27 is reruns of the previous season's Christmas week (they fell behind schedule because of Pat's situation and their taping/airing delay has caught up to them; they normally do not air reruns mid-season like other syndies). New episodes with Pat, taped before his surgery, air Dec 30-Jan 3, then Vanna will once again host the week of Jan 6-10.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Vanna will perform on set. I wonder if she has more enthusiasm about the game than Pat. I know the Disney characters are out there at the board, so no need for a sub sidekick.
And a few days before November 24th I logged in with my Spin ID...fingers crossed on a Secret Santa giveaway win.
And then at 8PM it's a holiday Beat Shazam on Fox. One of my favorite game shows. Better get my finals studying done now...

Wow that"s the best abc could do is some mickey mouse mascot to turn the letters how original. They easily could have brought in someone like heidi klum or tyra banks to do vannas job while she was hosting.
