When I think of REAL throwbacks, I always think of Ed Sheeran

What could be the logic for keeping Ed Sheeran in rotation on a throwback station that clearly skews Urban? None of Ed's songs could be considered throwbacks by any stretch of the imagination and any one of them would certainly be considered out of format, even if they do insist on saying that the stations is Hot AC. Seems like a tune-out opportunity. I can't make heads or tails of it!

It seems like the station is targeting the demographic that listened to Q102 circa 1998-2010ish? My guess is that keeping a high testing current/recurrent or two in the playlist helps keep those around who want to occasionally hear new music in their nostalgia trip?

Otherwise, ya got me.

Admittedly, I almost never listen to the radio (and when I do, it's not to 106.1 even though I like most of the songs they play) but I do check out playlists occasionally to get an idea of what local stations are doing. I don't remember seeing any other currents but there certainly may be some. Surely Ed's music tests well with many demos but it must sound like an audible trainwreck next to Jay-Z and Biggie!

"Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran is the name of the song. And yes I think it's strange that it gets airplay on on Real 106.1 which is mainly throwback hip-hop. I listen to Real 106.1 on the app everyday and they play some current hip-hop too. (Current to me is anything within the last 18 months). Two other surprising stations that had "Shape of You" in Heavy Rotation over the summer - Hot 93.7, which is the Entercom (ex-CBS) owned Hip-Hop station in Hartford and BOMBA-FM, which is an independently owned Spanish CHR station based out of WMRQ 104.1 HD2 in Waterbury (Hartford), CT and is fed to 5 translators in CT and an AM and a translator in Springfield, Mass.

Pretzel logic. I think all they want is a reason to get people talking. Maybe payola has returned to radio.
