Cume persons December 2022: 2,600,000 AQH Persons 63,700
Cume persons Holiday 2022: 3,118,000 AQH Persons 71,000

The age old question that is asked every year and has been since 2001. It will be when Disney opens their Holiday season in early in November. It will be way too soon and not early enough for those that only listen to KOST for holiday music.

It could be as early as November 1st, given that sister station WLIT-93.9 Chicago flipped on November 1st last year and supposedly saw an immediate ratings spike.

I-Heart may decide to do multiple Christmas flips around the country on November 1st, given how successful WLIT was with an early flip last year.

And a November 1st flip would be well before Disneyland begins their holiday season.

Also, if iHeart is worried about their current stock price and they plan to do their usual fall staff purge as a result, switching to holiday music on 11/1 let's them release at least some on-air staff and gives them nearly a few full months to decide whether or not to bring all of them back and in what capacity.

And will KKGO Go Country 105 also flip to Christmas music again this year? It's the only Country station in a sizable market to do it. In years past, is KKGO's switch before KOST, after KOST? Or as soon as KOST does it, KKGO follows suit?

It doesn't seem to give KKGO much of a ratings boost. But on the other hand, most Country stations see a dip in their December and Holiday ratings, so I guess that's why KKGO does it.

I seem to remember KKGO was around #15 in the December and Holiday ratings. Meanwhile KOST was #1 in December and Double Digits #1 in the Holiday ratings.

KTWV also tried going All-Christmas one year to compete with KOST, maybe ten years ago, before KKGO began its All-Christmas annual format switch. It was a one-time event. Not sure what year this happened but it was after all the Smooth Jazz instrumentals had been deleted.

If they fire staff, they won’t bring them back in a few months.

It was a few years ago, but I was in a Walmart and they had Christmas music playing.....In early September. Lasted one day, so I assume customers ripped them a new A-hole for playing it so early.

Maybe not in a few months and maybe not at the same station, but...In the past it's not been uncommon for iHeart to terminate in the fall, only for some of those same people to pop back up within months, at times in a different market and sometimes in a different capacity.

Staffing adjustments/reductions are commonly made in Q4, so the savings are realized in Q1 of the new year.
And it's not just the radio biz. A lot of businesses that start their new calendar year Jan. 1, look to cut expenses in Q4.

Correct. Note that my comments above were not critical of iHeart, but more a statement of fact, based on how that company has operated in more than a few past years, purging staff in Q4. That doesn't mean they're alone, and I never implied as some have that big, bad Clear Channel is trying to ruin Christmas for their staff and families.

I think around November 10th. Btw they always like to play it early. I definitely think they need way more variety of songs but I think that they purposefully leave out most religious songs until later just to not offend non-Christians. Most secular Christmas stations are definitely playing less religious Christmas songs than they used to.

WLTW and KKCW always have high ratings during the Holiday season but they both do it later than Nov 1. I don’t think KOST will do it that early but WLIT might. Lite FM will probably do it around Nov 3 but it could be Nov 1 or 2nd.

You greatly overestimate the average Walmart shopper's level of interest in the music playing in the store, and overestimate even more Walmart corporate's giving a crap about what their customers think about Christmas music. Maybe a wrong button was pushed on that oh so traumatic September day. Maybe the glitch got fixed right after you left the store. Whatever the case, I seriously doubt phone lines in Bentonville were overloaded with complaints.
