Where was mark madden today and who are the two guys that filled in for him?

Mark Madden has been on vacation and will be back on the air today. The two guys that filled in for him were Ken Laird and Joe Starkey.
Management insists that Mark's vacation has nothing to do with his meltdown on the air recently over getting the hook from the Sunday night sports show on Channel 4 and that he'll be back next week. If you missed it, it was classic Mark. Rained down hard on the Steelers organization and called Channel 4 ND Bob Longo everything but a nice guy.
What will be interesting is that Mark has less then a year left on his contract. Do you think 1250AM ESPN Radio will resign him?

Wow, Madden calling people names?
BTW, I know for a fact that his vacation was scheduled before the issues with TV. He went to England for soccer, as he does several times a year. People may be aware that he lost his mother earlier this year and he scheduled the vacation so he would be away during a family-oriented holiday. He would never want anyone to know it, but he does have feelings. Facing Thanksgiving without his mother would have been tough, so he spent the time in a country that doesn't even celebrate the holiday.

They will if they can get him at their price. They'll probably go hardball in negotiations. The station could easily reunite Stan and Guy in that slot and not miss a beat. But they should know that Junker would like to quit radio and go fulltime with TV if that opportunity presents itself.

Well, that's the perfect situation then: team up Savran and Junker and if Junker gets a TV gig, you do Savran by himself.
Sounds like a win-win to me.
Maybe not. Stan's audience skews older and is 180 degrees from the people who dig Madden. There may not be enough of the "old school" types and they may be too old to keep the niche of young males that Madden attracts with his pro wrestling/strip club schtick.
Having Stan and Guy keeps it at least somewhat contemporary. Stan alone is a 60-year-old man who wants to talk about the details of Steelers line play, not which Steeler has the hottest wife.

Well, considering that Ellis Cannon long ago beat Madden in the time they face each other, maybe the hottest Steeler wife schtick gets/got tiring?
I dunno, I'm just sayin'. I do understand there would be an unfilled (assumedly) desire for Madden's schtick, maybe, perhaps, I guess.
One tends to think, however, that if "Maddenism" really was in demand, they would have chosen him to move to FM rather than the guy who followed him.
But, again, I'm just sayin'.
No question Madden is niche programming. But it delivers the young males that 1250 is chasing, so they're happy with what he brings.
Any comparison of ratings has to factor in signal strength of 1250 AM vs. 104 FM, too. 1250 doesn't even cover all of Allegheny County.
Who would have chosen Madden to move to FM? Disney owns 1250 and CC owns the FM that hired Cannon.

Well, CC got Cannon to give up the Mouse and move to the Evil Empire...if Madden was worth it, surely CC would have found a way to get him out too.

Not necessarily. For one thing, Madden was under contract. He's also been 1250's cornerstone. I don't even know if Junker and Crowe were on the air yet at the time Cannon left. Another issue is I think CC was chasing a broader audience than the narrow niche 1250 has targeted. Madden's show wouldn't fit. CC chases PBP rights and two teams, Steelers and Pirates, want nothing to do with Madden.
Cannon left for a much better deal. He was going to be the only sports show at 104, as opposed to being on in a fringe time slot on an AM with a bad night time signal.

All excellent points, and further evidence of the Madden Effect that has infected the former wrestling announcer. His niche is slowly turning into pariah status. When you're the #1 sports voice in town and can't move up more than a middle-band AM station because of your pigeon-holed audience, that's saying something about your schlock.
And Cannon did leave for a much better deal--a deal which gave him the exposure he needed and which he wasn't getting at 1250, and the kind of deal (and station) that permits Cannon to have the kind of audience Madden wishes he had.
