Which Are Oldest AM & Oldest FM Radio Stations in the Hudson Valley & Albany ?

Which Are Oldest AM & Oldest FM Radio Stations in the Hudson Valley & Albany ?

Don't know if its been mentioned before but was wondering which are the Oldest AM & FM radio stations in the Hudson Valley & Albany area ? I thought I remember hearing that WGHQ or WGNY were one of the oldest stations but wasn't sure..not sure about Albany through.

Re: Which Are Oldest AM & Oldest FM Radio Stations in the Hudson Valley & Albany ?

I think WGNY-AM came on the air back in 1933. I know that because I remember listening to WGNY-AM and WGNY-FM in 2003 and it being mentioned on both stations that it was WGNY-AM's 70th year of being on the air.

Re: Which Are Oldest AM & Oldest FM Radio Stations in the Hudson Valley & Albany ?

Ok thanks...I think I remember hearing either WSPK or WKIP-FM might be the oldest FM radio station in the Hudson Valley.

In the Albany area, we're talking about the GE stations on both AM and FM.

WGY/Schenectady dates back to 1922 on 833 kc; moved to 790 kc in 1923, and then to 810 in 1942.

On FM, what is today WRVE/Schenectady started out in 1941 on the old FM band at 45.7 mhz with the call letters W57A; in 1943, moved to 48.5 mhz with the new call letters W85A; took the call letters WGFM in 1944; then moved to 100.7 mhz on the new FM band in 1946; and then finally to 99.5 mhz in 1948. From 1944-1988, they had the call letters WGFM, then WGY-FM from 1988-1994, and WRVE since then.

I thought WBPM was a super Rock automaticed radio station in 1976-1977...They sounded as good as WPLJ then minus DJ's of course. They had great jingles then too.
I think they shared the newscast with WGHQ then as well.

Yep! This station originally known as WGHQ-FM back in the mid-1960's playing easy listening/beautiful music, just like WPAT's original "Easy 93", WRFM and WTFM in New York City.

I remember going to New York City in 1966, and as 1540-WPTR was starting to fade as we went further south of Albany,
1550-WBAZ which was also Top 40 at the time, came blasting in. WBAZ was a 500 watt daytimer, I believe....

Re: Which Are Oldest AM & Oldest FM Radio Stations in the Hudson Valley & Albany ?

I moved to the Kingston area in 1973. WBAZ was no longer operating by then.

Re: Which Are Oldest AM & Oldest FM Radio Stations in the Hudson Valley & Albany ?

I'm not sure about that...as I mentioned before I know it was in the Summer of 1974 I heard a radio station on 1550 AM (not sure of the call letter though) in Kingston, New York...I know this for sure...

I dug through some old posts from a previous version of this boardthat I had saved . It seems 1550 WBAZ started in 1959 with a 500 watt daytime only signal .It must have been a poor signal as I never heard of it in Poughkeepsie . The station went through several owners ending up as WKOT, before going dark in 1974 when the IRS seized their assets. I quote from maineengineer :
“As I recall, WKOT went dark around the time we took WGHQ-FM to top 40, as WBPM, in 1974. The only tape I have of WBAZ is that of a single weather break from my "hat-trick" day on those three Kingston stations, in an era when radio was still fun. “

Re: Which Are Oldest AM & Oldest FM Radio Stations in the Hudson Valley & Albany ?

OK that was the station I was thinking about WKOT 1550..I had said WKET by mistake...
Could you post the WBAZ mp3s here ? Do you have any WKOT as well ? Thanks.

Re: Which Are Oldest AM & Oldest FM Radio Stations in the Hudson Valley & Albany ?

Sorry for the confusion. The comment about having a tape was part of a quote I copied from maineengineer telling about the station a few years ago. Unfortunately I have no air checks or tapes from 1550, WBAZ or WKOT, in fact I never heard of them until read about them on the Hudson Valley Radio Board.

oh ok..no problem...
