Which Houston radio station had the shortest living format and flipped the fastest?

Does the KZJZ smokescreen format on 106.9 count? If so, that format lasted what, 30 seconds?

"KZJZ Conroe. Jazzy 106.9. (opening bars of Kenny G "Songbird") (cut to "Do you get The Point" promo)

That's the one. I moved to Houston about a year after this went on air from the Philly area where Beasley was also running this Kabrick creation (now CHR WRDW "Wired"). The primary difference was Philly's PD had a Def Leppard fetish. No matter what time of day, if I got in my car, either the song that was on or the next song that was on was a Def Leppard song. Houston mixed it up better.

How about the short lived "Sounds of the Bay" 1540 KGBC, after Hurricane Ike? 1540 launched live and local, from Galveston island in February 2009. C.R.I. has leased all of KGBC's time since January 1, 2010.

Jazzy 106-9...even went out and got the calls for the rouse. Now that's commitment to a smokescreen.

PD, this also reminds me of the once and mighty KSTB when it was the real thing (studios in Webster, 25kw power). Trying to remember how long that lasted as well. The original star of the bay ran bird-powered AC, but GBC had more variety in their soundtracks!

Ah yes, the "Star of the Bay" 101-5 KSTB. Remember it well. I don't know its duration as the "Star", but*I believe it was there a few years before Cumulus acquired it and simulcasted KD 101 on the signal.

I was listening to KGBC a lot around that time while I was working down in Clear Lake. Mark Landis was doing liners for them.

KGBC=K Galveston Broadcasting Company, the original owner of 1540.

But....

Let's see who the biggest radio geek here in Houston really is.

What did the on air personalities say that the KGBC calls stood for during the "Sound of the Bay" incarnation in 2009? They mentioned it constantly, especially around the TOH ID.

Give you all some time to ponder...

They had a sign over Broadway as you got off the causeway: "Keep Galveston Beaches Clean."

He shoots, he scores! Well done, John!

Back on topic, another short lived format in Houston that we have seemingly forgotten is "FM News Channel, 97-5" KFNC Beaumont. Moved the rock format to 103-7 in May 2005 and launched the news station, which then flipped to "Super Talk 97-5" in March 2006, 10 months later. How'd we over look this one?

Speaking of which...

Super Talk 97-5 lasted until December 22, 2006, then flipping to "ESPN 97-5 The Ticket", for a total of 7 months as Super Talk.

Boy, 97-5 has sure been through hell since it abandoned Beaumont, lol.

Noticed this morning too that 1140 was not simulcasting 1230. If this was brought to a close for any reason it's also one of the shortest lived of a kind.......

Speaking of 1140AM, isn't that a Conroe frequency? I recall during summer of 1985 there was a station in Conroe which was KMUV at 1140AM. They were a top 40 format from what I remember. Not sure how long that lasted.

1140 still is a Conroe freq....5KW DA Day only....protects the former WTAW (now KZNE 1150)....Was also the split of the city police repeater....at night if someone left the carrier on (which happened a lot! :) ) the police repeater would lock itself up...got a call from a PD friend of mine who asked if something could be done...I called the on call service tech at Gulf States (before Entergy) and he went over the opened the line fuse to the transformer...(dont know HOW that happened!! and that was back in the early 90s so statue of limitations are over)....they had to detune a couple of GSU poles when they upgraded power....a CE out of Houston, I THINK at 26, was their engineer...nice guy but I had to wonder WHY they were even bothering with a daytimer only...and spending that much money to upgrade and detune, etc....they should move the station one or two channels and see if they could get UL even as a D at night...but with the growth of the area west on the lake, they likely would not cover out there....and 1150 (which WAS supposed to go away) is still on the air in CS/B

1140 and 880 prevented a couple of mux freqs on GSU's microwave from being used....880 was worse..the path from Conroe Bulk m/w on the south side to Cleveland went RIGHT over 880s site.....with a Rycom monitoring the baseband in AM wide mode and tuned to 880, there it was....so channels from 860 to 910 were not used...1140 affected the south baseband after they upgraded to 5KW but those mux freqs were not used at the time anyway...
