Which stations do you like to see a change in format or content anywhere in Alabama the most?

I wrote this question because listening to radio is not as great as it use to, at least where I live. I would like to hear either WTAK to stop airing Nascar races and play some later post-1990 mostly alternative rock into their format in a special 2-hour show kind of like House of Hair but without the '80s hair metal. Or change Mixx 102.9 to go to completely alternative rock and pump up their signal so at least in the Gadsden and Huntsville area too, can have some different rock other than the over-played classic rock that WTAK plays. Or change the boring talk format of 101.1 The Source to alternative rock since they have the strongest signal coverage in Alabama and make them be a competition against WRAX. Maybe then Citadel would wish that they never move The X to begin with. You can tell I am still piss off that they did that.

What other radio stations make you wish they would go away or change their crappy format/content? More likely it may never happen but just for fun tell.

102.9 wouldn't be possible here because we have a 102.9.... and a 103.1, I'd LOVE to see WTAK either made to suck less or flipped and classic rock put on a stronger non CC signal

Its obvious you want a stronger alt. rocker, haha. Well, its not happening with the source, ever. They are owned by a christian broadcasting group (crawford).

If I had a choice, Id flip that bastard station WQEN. It hasn't been fully realized since the day it launched. Hell, just take a format and stick to it. Top 40 my ass, they play any Top 40 song from any chart over the last 4 years.

Also, someone needs to buy out WQEM from the church, give it some juice, and put something listenable on there. Maybe an all-rocker, an alt. rocker, or even another FM talker wouldn't be bad. Just no more country or hip-hop/r&b, we have plenty in the Birmingham/Tuscaloosa area, its saturated, now lets give rock more than 2 stations.

You mean WXJC, right? It'd be more likely to become the Christian CHR as long as Crawford still has it. Why they haven't plugged something like that in off the bird, I have no idea.

Sports Radio 97.3 w/ SNR and Tigers or Trojans football.

Where's WEZZ? WKLD shouldn't change. It's Blount County's only English station and that area is growing rapidly.

My other changes in Birmingham/Gadsden/Anniston/Sand Mountain

91.9: Either WGIB drops the frequency and keeps 101.5 or WLJS gets the new 100.1-Anniston, leaves 91.9, and drops the redundant NPR talk for more rock and student content. The remaining station could probably increase power somewhat and I wouldn't have to use antenna-fu to hear 92J on my property right in the battle zone.

92.7: Still country, but more male-friendly, less soft AC funeral music and more roadhouse-rocking classics.

93.1: Full-on Variety Hits.

94.5: Hot AC, drop the Lite Rock imagery, put Hick and Blubba on either of the talkers and hire a morning show that doesn't sound like Tradio (how are Tuttle and Kline doing in Houston? They could come back to town once any non-compete they have is up).

98.3: WTRB goes to oldies, WKEA can do anything, but they should change their slogan, 2 K98s in NE Alabama is confusing. Not to mention K92 in Cullman and K97.7 WKLD. It's just overused.

1320: Libtalk.

1340 WXXR/1390 WHMA: Merge and bring FSR to all of NE Alabama.

I didn't know that Crawford was a Christian broadcasting group. That just sucks. I am non-religionous and don't care much for those kind of stations. As far for WQEN, I can't pick up 103.7 anymore at home since they move their signal from Gadsden to Birmingham. In the car yes but not at home. And since gas is going to stay around $3 a gallon for a long time, I am not going to drive around just to listen to that station or Hot 107.7, which I pick up in my car today.

I am tired of discussing the lack of a real rock station here in northern Alabama. If anyone has information on a new alternative rock station coming to northeast Alabama please post it. Anyways you won't hear much from me for a while. It's obvious that country, urban, and religionous formats run the show in northeast Alabama.

89.5-> becomes WUAB-FM, the student run station UAB should've had all along to compliment its communications department; local music, news and select Blazer olympic sports broadcast by students

92.5->Classic Hip-Hop, 1980-1996 or as close as you can get to 'Old School Rap' on Music Choice.

93.7->becomes 'The Fish', modeled after Atlanta's.

97.3->Sports radio like clichemoth describes below, adding the Falcons and the Braves (all summer games, night/wknd games during football season & late spring, all of the postseason)

101.1/1260->Oldies 60-80s oldies, with popular TV and movie themes shuffled in; flagship for Blazer football/basketball

101.5->AAA "The Pig"

WAY FM ditch those two translators and relocate to a full power frequency
WKXN ditch those two translators and relocate to a full power frequency
WQKS relocate, so that they can have a real chance to compete

Isn't that what almost every other Top 40 station in the country does?! I think Q is doing a good job of playing the hits, and sounding like a decent big city CHR. Expect to see their ratings increase in the coming 6 months, as the station's signal can now finally be heard properly in all of metro Brimingham.

Expect not. Considering 103.7 has always had a good signal in Bham, I really don't expect much of a change. If anything, I expect a drop because of the decreased signal in its former home in East Alabama, but who knows, they may gain some from picking up Tuscaloosa. To me, its not a great tradeoff, two cities for one. Say what you want about the CHR format, I just don't see how Weezer can be on the same playlist as Fat Joe. That's all. Maybe I missed something

I beg to differ about the oversaturation of Urbans. There is currently no Mainstream Urban in Birmingham, and the closest we get to that is wannabe Rhythmic WBHJ 95.7 Jamz. We could use something to compete against them to give the 18-34 demo more variety we it comes to hip hop and current R&B.

IMO, WENN @ 105.5 goes Mainstream Urban with a playlist that consists of up-to-date hip hop, R&B, and gospel. It airs a slow jams show from 10p to 2a every Sunday through Thursdays. (But on the real, from what I'm hearing that might just wind up happening with 105.5).<P ID="signature">______________

If they got the mix right and promoted the heck out of the heritage calls (like WZZK, WENN shouldn't need a slogan), it'd put dents in Jamz, Kiss, and Hot and rake in the bucks, something the all-gospel format can't seem to manage.

And I don't think we're oversaturated with urban at all, especially since it is the hot mainstream genre at the moment.

Country, OTOH, is definitely WAY overdone around here between WZZK, the Bull, 97.3 and the infinite amount of suburban stations that touch some part of the market.

NE Alabama is over-AC'd, whereas Birmingham doesn't even have a real Hot AC at all (although Point could become one without being totally demolished).

There aren't really enough potential listeners to make any Spanish format profitable on a big signal.

We already have one of those oldies stations that doesn't position itself as one that some people on the Oldies board think can preserve the format (Since Magic does do reasonably well, they could have a point there).

There is definitely room for a strong rock station with a knowledgeable local staff, heavy street promotion, and a willingness to break new acts. I mean, we had one once and it held its own. That would take time, money, and effort, though, and no one seems to want to put much of that into rock radio around here.
