Have you contacted someone at Clear Channel about your concerns? WLAC, being a 50 KW station in this market, should be local, at least during the day, like it was in the 80's. I can understand brokered/paid programming at night, because of the skywave and these dumb preachers think they are reaching the world on a 50 KW station covering 30 states and we all know nobody is paying them any attention, but during the day, Clear Channel should have some sense to be live and local.
Those preachers (and I'm assuming you are referring to the likes of R. G. Stair and Peter J. Peters) use those large clear channel AM stations in much the same way that they also use shortwave radio: to reach their listeners for relatively little cost. Obviously, their signal reaches lots of folks who will never tune them in, but it is apparently cost effective for them for those listeners that they do reach, because if it weren't successful for them, they'd stop buying the airtime, and would spend their money someplace else. And it's beneficial for the stations because if they are unable to sell the airtime to anyone else, the time would go unsold all together. And we all know that half a loaf is better than no loaf at all.
