I hate to admit this, but I never really found any DJs to admire. By the time I came to appreciate their talents I was on into talk radio. If we can expand this to include all radio personalities and not just music jocks, I'd say Don Geronimo, Neal Boortz and Ken Hamblin were talkers I've admired for one reason or another. The only "local" personality I really jibe with these days is Richard Dixon on WAPI-FM.

My favorite Talk DJ's Include:

The ones carried on WAPI FM Birmingham
The ones carried on soon to be WACV FM Montgomery
...And Of Course, the Head of the Republican Party El-Rushbo

Some of my favorites and mentors would be:

The late Richard Froemke (on air as Bob Richards), who did news and sports, first on WTNT-AM 1270 Tallahassee and later at WTAL-AM 1450, where we met and became lifelong friends.

Wayne Hodges on WOMA-FM 94.9 in the 1970s

Meredith Braswell, who used the on air names of Dale Mitchell and Mike Evans on WLOR-AM 730 in Thomasville, WMEN-AM 1330 in Tallahassee and WOMA-FM 94.9 in Tallahassee. He also worked for WTAL at one point before I was there.

The late Vic Swan of WONS-AM 1410 and others

Jaxon Riley of Albany, GA., now on WKAK K-Country 104

Tom Derzypolski, on air as Tommy Dee at WTAL - he was my first radio boss.

I'm sure there are/were others, but these really stand out to me.

I'm kinda the same way except I did have one DJ that I appreciated.

Past favorite DJ would be Coyote J from the 107.7 The X era. That era is when I heard the most from him because of The X's then flamethrower signal.

Current favorite "local" talk radio personality would be Steve West from 101.1 WYDE. I don't agree with all of his politics, but I like how calm and collect he is. Plus, his show doesn't stay on politics all the time.

Oh wow, I'd forgotten about him. First time I heard him he was doing oldies on 102.5 back when it first got on the Tuscaloosa tall tower, I believe. It was also the first time I'd heard a jock get really interactive with the music, inserting SFX and other odd things into the songs. Hearing him later with his alternative show on The X threw my brain for a loop.

He played some really off the wall, non-mainstream music then, so yeah, I guess I could say I admire him as well for plugging away at his own show for so long.

Actually, Coyote was on 102.5 in their days as Top Z-102. My memories of him go back to the days of Top 40 on 96-ERC in the mid to late 70's. He may have been one of the best at his craft back then.

The last I've checked, his Edge show is retired. It had a brief resurgence on Rock 99.5 WZRR a few years back. At that time, I had to listen online because WZRR signal was pretty much non-existent on the outskirts of the Huntsville market.

KW and Wendy from WOOF FM and Mix 96.9 and anyone who ever graced the falls of woof and Mix 103
