Who carried the Daytona 500 in Pittsburgh on the radio.

I was in the car. trying to hear the race. I thought clear channel had the
nextel races. I think 970 had pitt basketball and former saints coach talking about other sports mentioning NASCAR in a report. 3ws played music?
1280 new castle, 107.5 wheeling had the race. butler should but I did not hear it. and a station on 640 called hello did have it too. Who is carrying the sport in Pittsburgh? Fox Sports Radio keeps running national spots that no one covers NASCAR like them. Yesterday they were broadcasting from Daytona. Nothing available
on Pittsburgh radio today. What gives?

This sport does not bring alot of marketing dollars to a station from what I've heard. It can add a few listeners here and there if your lucky or fill airtime, but it does not give you much for advertisers since a nascar races usually have a TV audience not a radio audience. <P ID="signature">______________

Last I heard, and correct me if I am wrong on this, but MRN/PRN is not simply a barter deal anymore, you have to pay to carry it as well as additional programming. When I last worked those broadcasts, we also carried as part of the contract Pit Reporters, Coca Cola Race Refresher, Ned Jarret's World of racing and were required to carry a handful of Busch Races as well. While I think Nascar is a sellable entity for any station, I don't know if any station in the city is willing to lay out money and hope they can get it back in sales.

As for FSR, the national network does okay with racing, carrying a racing show Sunday mornings as well as giving it decent mention in most of their talk shows. The local affiliate (970) has a contract with the University of Pittsburgh. I can only guess that part of that contract forces them to carry women's basketball (yesterday's game was Pitt/WVU) as well as thye more radio friendly properties of men's football and basketball.

I'm just making a point. I knew the race was on. But like most Pittsburghers, NASCAR racing is right up there with European "football" as a sport we care about. You can go on and on about how great the soccer World Cup is and how many billions of people watch it, or how many people around the world watch every cricket match on the telly, but those sports just aren't popular in Pittsburgh. And NASCAR has just slightly more fan support in Pittsburgh than soccer and cricket.

Now, if any station were to carry NASCAR, it wouldn't be a "sports" station anyway. WDVE carries the Steelers, but otherwise it's not a sports station. The likeliest home for NASCAR in Pittsburgh would be either WDSY or the Froggies.

Realist- You're wrong on this

The Pittsburgh market gets the third-highest ratings in the country for NASCAR races on TV.

My source is the media relations liason for FOX.

We have two weekly series racing tracks in Western PA at Jennerstown and Smithton. And we even have a local driver in Sharon's Dave Blaney.

The fact the local media ignores this is, at best, disgraceful and certainly not profitable. It's a very old-school thinking and shows the disconnect that the media has with the community.

But I guess when all your sales staff knows is how to sell beer and strip joints- you ignore the potential that you can receive with lucurative automobile sponsorships.

I have lived right by Bristol and in Pittsburgh. I can tell you I have never seen more NASCAR fans than in the Pleasant Hills area.

The fact FOX 970 carried the women's basketball game nobody cared about over the Daytona 500 is yet another indication of how political correctness is destroying society.

Nascar officials and team publicists have told me that North Carolina has the
most members of driver fan clubs. Who is 2nd - PENNSYLVANIA. And they are not all in Somerset or Greene County. Being involved with various auto racing programs that have aired on PIttsburgh area stations for the past 20 years, I could give you a bunch of other statistics that would also show how many NASCAR fans are in the area, but I won't bore you. However, the small establishment I wss at yesteday had over 50 people watching the race, Mayor O'Connor attended a big Daytona 500 party at Station Square, and numerous other bars in th PIttsburgh area had race parties. To compare NASCAR with cricket and European soccer in local popularity is just ridiculous.

The problem with carrying MRN is the requirement to carry the other programming, and the length of the NASCAR season, which can conflict with other sports that may be carried on a sports station. That's why you'll find MRN and PRN on mostly rock and country stations.

But if NASCAR is mostly on rock and country stations- couldn't that explain its popularity?

Instead of being on a highly-targeted sports station or news-talk, the sport is marketed to a format of lively and energetic music.

In fact, there is even a show- it airs as the Sunday morning show on Y108 I believe- called NASCAR Country- where they play two hours of country and surround it behind NASCAR info.

WBGG did this once upon a time with John Boy and Billy on Sunday mornings- which had more of a southern rock feel. The show never got any publicity from The Burgh- maybe because culturally the show really was more West Virginia than Pittsburgh- and maybe because at the time the station's top gun was Scott Paulsen and you couldn't be more culturally opposite than Paulsen and John Boy and Billy.

All I know is that Pittsburgh is really missing out- the audience clearly wants the programming and the programmers have their heads in the sand. The Citizens of Pittsburgh aren't behind the times here- it's the radio executives that are.

I'll go as far as to say that I think part of WPTT's woes came from the fact they dropped NASCAR.

The fact they would build around past-their-prime talk shows and/or Air America instead of the hottest sport going speaks volumes of why their ratings fell to 0.7.

It wouldn't explain it's TV popularity, so I am not sure how much it really explains it's radio popularity. Ideally, if someone is going to seek out the race on the radio, first they would probably be a fan of the sport, whether the race is on a music station or not. Certainly music stations can coattail that with either a southern rock, or country and western type of music show, because while the popularity of the sport is growing, it is still viewed as that of a southern sport.

To be honest, I think it would have a good chance on any male dominated station in the market, I would even consider putting it on 104.7, just because from what I have heard of their weekends (and admittedly, it isn't much) it is just syndicated fare rehashed from the week (though I remember catching a bad fantasy football show on there one Sunday morning).

As far as WPTT goes, I am not sure what you are proposing. They should be racing 24/7? They should still be doing all sports? Racing is good weekend programming for a station that grabs it, it eats up hours that are either syndicated or taped (or both) for the most part with a live presence. With the right sales staff, you could probably even turn a profit off of it. I just don't see PTT paying for the slight chance of turning a profit at their ad rates for weekend fare, when they can run syndicated for free. And weekend programming (other than the Steelers), isn't going to help your overall rating up all that much.

Regardless of how popular or unpopular NASCAR might be, and if I was wrong about how popular it was, I was wrong. However, there are sports that translate well into radio, and there are sports that only work well live or on TV. Golf broadcasts on TV seem to be popular, based on how many hours of televised golf there are. Yet you don't hear golf tournaments carried on the radio.

In other parts of the country, do large numbers of people tune into radio broadcasts of NASCAR racing? Is NASCAR like football where fans turn down the TV sound to hear the radio announcers call the races?

It's an example of how universities make broadcasters take things they don't want in order to get things they do want. You want Pitt football and basketball? OK, you'll have to take women's basketball, too.

Penn State pulled the same power play years ago, forcing KDKA to carry a certain number of (men's) basketball games in order to get PS football.

Yeah, RR, NASCAR gets good TV numbers in Pittsburgh as well. But it's true, you have to commit to the whole season, plus stuff like "NASCAR Live". WIXZ used to carry it when they were country, and I think it went to WPTT for a while after the name/format change.<P ID="signature">______________

But again, you're not going to cover up an hour of Eliis Cannon on a weeknight for NASCAR Live.

NASCAR is a big money-maker on radio though most of the south (but strangely, not in Florida, except for the Daytona market itself).

And no, they don't have to turn down the sound... the NBC announcers are all MRN guys.<P ID="signature">______________

If the person who launched this thread was not out driving in his car, if he was somewhere that he could watch the race on TV, would there be any reason why he would listen to the radio broadcast? Would a local radio station really get lots of extra listeners on a Sunday (when most people aren't at work or out driving around) broadcasting a sporting event on their radio station that was also being broadcast on television?

That's why I asked about turning down the TV sound to listen to the radio. I'll wager that if WDVE didn't get listeners using Hillgrove and Ilkin as announcers for the TV broadcasts, then they wouldn't get half the ratings for the Steelers that they get.

Given that the announcers are the same, I doubt anyone would opt for radio over TV. But the days of people simply working 9-5 M-F have long since passed by a significant number of Americans. As a result, those people that aren't home have another outlet to catcth a sporting event they would otherwise miss.

Plus, a large portion, but not all of the racing season, happens during warm weather months, when those people that are off on the weekends, may be outside with the family, or on vacation rather than opting to stay home in front of the TV.

Finally, while a large number of people have cable TV, not everyone does. With the racing season split between NBC and Fox, the result is that half of the racing season is on Fox`affiliates, and a decent number of those are still on hard to get UHF channels. I know personally with an antenna in my apartment in Oakland I am hard pressed to get 53 here.
 
Not only that-

Radio broadcasts of NASCAR actually do have more information- the way a race is covered is actually- for lack of a better term- with several play-by-play men at each turn and a quick "Let's go to turn one- to turn three" and so on.

And they also are generally not only announcing lead changes- but also- say- the battle for the Top 10.

The breaks in radio are different than on TV so I don't see a lot of "turn down the sound."

I will say this- when I worked in Pleasant Hills at a place that had the radio on all the time the only time we ever listened to AM was when the race was on WPTT. I am a big AM fan, but the rest of the staff didn't even switch the band when 9/11 hit.

The other point I'll make is that I used to run the board for races. Admittedly, the station was out of the market, but it was the only sports the AM news-talk I worked at ran- save for some play-by-play of a local high school team.

They continually refused to carry sports talk and the Friday night high school game was clearly to serve the local interest.

Other stations in the market that could easily be heard where we were also carrying the races.

Didn't matter. We carried, we gathered an audience, we sold.

To tell you the truth, if nobody picks it up in Pittsburgh the programmers are sleeping under a rock.

Have to pick up the other motor racing programming? Nothing wrong with that.

Certainly "NASCAR Live" would be better programming than what usually passes for sports talk at 7 p.m. Tuesdays around here- especially on WBGG and WEAE.
