Basically its this, the formats that have a majority black listernership in D/FW get no respect on the D/FW radio board. They are made fun of. So the comments made by buc and myself because we feel that if you have never lived or been part of the hip hop community, then you can't critize it. Most of you prolly don't know the difference between KHVN and KLTY. It does not matter to you anyway.

And while I don't listen to that style of music,(so I couldn't tell you who's on K104 those shifts) I respect what they do. And there's a lot more to respect (consistent top 5, longterm presence, etc) then there is to respect about KLLI right now (Currently 20th IIRC 12+)
Other than Steve Eberhart or Mike Shannon, who knows how long Willis Johnson has been at KKDA, Joe Bagby at KHVN. Does anyone know what shift "Da Wolf" does on KKDA. Does anyone know what Da Wolf does from 8am to 5pm

(And the same goes for the hispanic stations. KESS and KLNO are in the top 5. People who gripe about 'the damn Mexican stations" are just showing their racism and their ignorance of reality. You don't have to listen to them. You don't have to like them. But you better damn sure take them into account because they're sucking up huge ratings. And that means huge revenue. And that means their paychecks get bigger as yours get smaller...)

I prefer K104 over The Beat, but dont listen to either of them that much because rap music is so bad right now. I swear all either one of them plays is Lil Wayne or some garbage dance song.

I have tremendous respect for K104, even though I rarely listen. I respect them because they know how to do quality radio, unlike most of the major broadcasting companies.

There is no such thing as a best hip hop station.

I've talked to MC Serch, who does the Old Skool Show for Superadio, and he says that it's been really, really tough to get any affiliates for his show. Another PD I know of is doing a classic hip hop show on Saturday night on an Urban AC station, and while it had some buzz for a few months, the excitement died down after that.
I've listened to Backspin on Sirius quite a bit (haven't had a chance to hear very much of XM's The Rhyme), and I really like the music. But, I think that for most people, at least on a commercial station, most of what they play is way too unfamiliar. Granted, I can name the artist and title of every song, but I would guess that even someone who likes hip hop would not know 75% of the playlist. The other thing about Backspin that really lacks is the content between the songs. There really is none.
What are your thoughts on how a classic hip hop station could be a winning format?
