who got the best hiphopstation in dallas texas

There's always criticizm of hip hop on this board. That's why anything concerning 104 or 97.9, I'll post on the urban board. Not this one.

If you don't know the format, lifestyle and music of hip hop, then don't comment on it. Unfortunately, what is out there today is trash. If you never have put on a suede Puma with fat laces, then hush ya mouth.

::) If you don't like what someone writes, then skip over their posts.

Take your own advice......

I don't need to, as no one here is saying anything I don't like.

Basically its this, the formats that have a majority black listernership in D/FW get no respect on the D/FW radio board. They are made fun of. So the comments made by buc and myself because we feel that if you have never lived or been part of the hip hop community, then you can't critize it. Most of you prolly don't know the difference between KHVN and KLTY. It does not matter to you anyway.

Jedi knows of what he speaks. You see a lot of 'that crap needs to go away', usually said with such venom that you can see the unsaid 'N" word before the crap.

Look at how many posts P&K or Russ get, and compare it to what the midday or afternoon drive hosts on K104 get. Yep, no repesct and little to no discussion.

And while I don't listen to that style of music,(so I couldn't tell you who's on K104 those shifts) I respect what they do. And there's a lot more to respect (consistent top 5, longterm presence, etc) then there is to respect about KLLI right now (Currently 20th IIRC 12+)

Other than Steve Eberhart or Mike Shannon, who knows how long Willis Johnson has been at KKDA, Joe Bagby at KHVN. Does anyone know what shift "Da Wolf" does on KKDA. Does anyone know what Da Wolf does from 8am to 5pm

Not me. But I admit to my ignorance on this subject.

But that doesn't mean I don't respect it.

(And the same goes for the hispanic stations. KESS and KLNO are in the top 5. People who gripe about 'the damn Mexican stations" are just showing their racism and their ignorance of reality. You don't have to listen to them. You don't have to like them. But you better damn sure take them into account because they're sucking up huge ratings. And that means huge revenue. And that means their paychecks get bigger as yours get smaller...)

Salem, you and Little1 just summed it all up right there. Those are the words that I have been looking for all along, and just didn't know how to say it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

No problem hoss...I got ya back

I prefer K104 over The Beat, but dont listen to either of them that much because rap music is so bad right now. I swear all either one of them plays is Lil Wayne or some garbage dance song.

You guys are talking about two different things here! Is this thread about "The best station..." or "The state of Hip Hop music"?

I have tremendous respect for K104, even though I rarely listen. I respect them because they know how to do quality radio, unlike most of the major broadcasting companies.

There is no such thing as a best hip hop station.

Actually there is. Unfortunately its on XM Radio. Its called 65 The Rhyme. All the hip hop classics, all the time. None of the (c)rap music they record today.

I don't think the kids of today can appreciate the old school. Actually it would be better as a 24/7 format on a full signal stick.

While I agree that it would be very, very cool to hear as a 24/7 format, most of the people I've talked to say it doesn't work. I've talked to MC Serch, who does the Old Skool Show for Superadio, and he says that it's been really, really tough to get any affiliates for his show. Honestly, I just don't think it belongs on contemporary urban/hip-hop stations. It doesn't really fit, nor does that demographic care about it. Another PD I know of is doing a classic hip hop show on Saturday night on an Urban AC station, and while it had some buzz for a few months, the excitement died down after that.

I've listened to Backspin on Sirius quite a bit (haven't had a chance to hear very much of XM's The Rhyme), and I really like the music. But, I think that for most people, at least on a commercial station, most of what they play is way too unfamiliar. Granted, I can name the artist and title of every song, but I would guess that even someone who likes hip hop would not know 75% of the playlist. The other thing about Backspin that really lacks is the content between the songs. There really is none.

What are your thoughts on how a classic hip hop station could be a winning format?
