Who has the Best Morning Show in the Huntsville Market?

I don't know who really has the best morning show in this market. I usually listen to the Rick and Bubba show because they keep it clean and I agree with their conservative views, but not their religious views. Tried listening to Fish before when R&B were on Christmas break, but I didn't much care for his show.

As far as ratings go, ususally WDRM's morning show and WZYP's Mojo Radio Show battle it out each season for the top spot ratings wise in the mornings.

I like Rick and Bubba as well because I usually agree with their views and opinions. Most of the time atleast. They keep it clean, and they are not scared to bring up religious values and reinterate what the bible teaches despite the fact that some may not like it. The bible says what it says, and if you claim to be a christian then you should follow it to the best of your ability, period. Not try to twist what it teaches around to fit what you want it to say. I agree, and I like their stance on that. I also like the Mojo radio show. It's probably the best local show in my opinion. They are good family entertainment and they can make you laugh. They are always playing games and just having fun. I've tried listening to the local "WE-UP too early morning show" on 103.1 but I just can't do it. I find myself bored out of my mind. They seem to think they are funny but are really just very corny and bland. I would maybe find myself listening to WDRM's morning show if it weren't for Dingo. He gets on my nerves & I think he should really make sure he's got his facts strait before he comments on something. The "Go Fish radio network" on the rocket is VERY adult. It can be very funny at times but sometimes my jaw drops when I hear some of the things he says. Huntsville isn't used to that kind of talk on the radio. Definitely no kids allowed. "Big Boy's Neighborhood" on Hot 103.5 is OK but I don't see it ever being a major morning show player here. If the Tom Joyner morning show on 94.1 haden't gotten so racially centered I think it would still be entertaining. I haven't really listened to any of the others, but those are my thoughts. Take it or leave it.

I have to agree with RollTide abot R/B. I enjoy listening to them Because of their pronounced faith in God and their conservative views. Sometimes Rick and Bubba can be boring, though. Never listened to fish. John Boy and Billy can be funny, but also their show has more sexual innuendo than you can shake a stick at. I once thought Dan and Gerald on WDRM were pretty good (Gerald did have a overdone laugh). When Gerald left to be with former DRM'er Mark Donovan on 105.7 I quit listening to the show, I just don't think Dingo is that funny. I do like the show Mark and Dan do on 105.7 WQAH, It's not a funny show, but just a good locally small town show out of Hartselle.

This is out of topic, but my favorite used to be "the Flying Dutchman radio Show" out of Cullman on 95.5 WFMH. after FMH packed up and moved to browner pastures the show was cancelled. I Guess my top two are Rick and Bubba and John Boy and Billy

"...Pass the gravy please.." ;D

Surely I can't be the only person who gets turned off (and responds in kind) by hearing sermonizing on the radio...

You're not the only one. When Rick and Bubba go on one of their religious rants or have some Christian/Country musicians on, that's when I turn the radio off.

Fish would be alright if they would tone it down a little bit without being corny or bland. I don't mean to sound uptight, but it's too early in the day to hear that kind of humor/subject matter.

Another good thing about Mojo from a music standpoint is you don't hear rap music that early in the day. So you don't have to worry about your kids hearing Lollypop, or that rap song about soiling bedsheets.

Well here in the Big Huntsvegas you have your choice on what you want to hear in the morning.

My only problem with Rick and Bubba is the fact that I have met Rick a few times thru out the years and everytime he has this I'm better

than you outlook. Even after I said Im in the business as well he snubed me off . When I met Tom Joyner he was very cool he stood there

and actually held a conversation with me.

Anyway I will get off my soapbox to all morning shows with the exception of R&B good luck

The Shady Nation

I agree that R&B can get boring from time to time. Their best shows are usually when someone funny is guest appearing on it. Still, I like listening.

Oh, and I forgot about John Boy & Billy. They aren't bad either. Sometimes they laugh entirely too much though and you forget what they were even talking about that was so funny, or miss it all together!

Well I have been here for 11 years now! I was a big Rick and Bubba Fan before they turned into just too in your face about God! I am a christian and i dont want it shoved in my face like that! It is a personal choice!

I like Mojo good guy just not much content, and I hate the music on WZYP!

Dan and Dingo are good guys, and do a good show!

Jon Boy and Billy are Funny... Well Pillars is the best guy on that show!

I know some of you said the Go Fish Show is too dirty, but i think it will soon be the #1 show in North Alabama! Edgy works! He does a lot for the community through helping the less fortunate, Military or the Police!

As a Christian I have to say he is doing more than Rick and Bubba ever did for this community.

I love the Local guys! Old School radio!

Just my two cents!

The problem I have with Mojo's show (besides the not much content and WZYP's music issue) is his morning segments with the WAAY-31 anchors. Either the television newscast segment they have with Mojo is either prerecorded or it's Mojo's radio segment where the anchors are on the phone is prerecorded. You would think the tv and radio segments would both sync up exactly other than the few seconds delay, but it not like that at all.

Fish may have done a lot of good for the community but I doubt he will have the #1 show mainly due to WRTT's signal coverage. If WRTT had a blowtorch coverage like WZYP has, then his chances of having the #1 show would be higher.

I agree that Mojo's show could use a little more content to make it better. What kills me about the segments with WAAY 31 is, they need to time them better or something. There have been several times where I have been listening and in the middle of the break the 31 newscasters disappear. It's like they had to go back on the air on the TV and didn't realize it till it was happening and they just dropped the phone and left. Or Mojo will be talking and he'll ask them a question and they won't answer because they had to go back on the air on TV. Or in mid-topic the 31 newscasters will quickly say "oh gotta go bye!" and their gone. Someone needs to do a better job of keeping up with the breaks and timing them right so that that stuff doesn't happen anymore because it sounds terrible and unprofessional.

Oh, and don't get me started on their music issues. I may like the morning show some but ZYP is the worst programmed CHR/Top 40 I have ever heard. TERRIBLE recurrents and WAY too much of them an hour, and the same ones play every single day. Very selective music and NOTHING rhythmic or urban/crossover-like until after about 6pm. I've said it on here before and I'll say it again. They are an Hot A/C station by day and a CHR/Top 40 by night. We have 2 other A/C stations not including 100.3 The River. We don't need any more! A true Top 40 would be so great in Huntsville. Too bad we don't have one. It makes me sick when I go to neighboring markets and listen to their Top 40 and they sound SOOO much better than our wanna be one here. Will ZYP ever get any better musically? Don't hold your breath. Ok, I'll get off my soap box now. LOL

I remember from the late 90s to 2003 that WZYP was so against playing rap that they would delete most of the rap songs off American Top 40 and Rick Dees and insert a Hot AC friendly or even a recurrent. I was so mad that I even wrote WZYP a letter and told them that they were racists for deleting rap songs off the countdown shows. It was basically just like Star 94 ATL, very Adult Top 40 back then.

When I was younger, when I would go out of town, I would also be saying, man, so and so's top 40 station is better than WZYP. Now late at night, WZYP wiill play those rap songs like Country Grammar and the Real Slim Shady that WZYP would delete off the national countdown shows when rap hits like those charted.

I personally think that Clear Channel should flip 100.3 The River to a pure top 40 station, yes even if it is a Kiss Station. The River fell to 9th place in the Spring ratings. They could play hip hop songs during the day for those who don't want to listen to WZYP's retro lunch. Rythmic Hot 103.5 is a great station, but they have a very poo poo signal once you get outside of Huntsville/Madison proper. At least if 100.3 became top 40, at least the signal would be enough to cover Decatur, Athens, Huntsville, and maybe Scottsboro.

The only issue would be what to do with Rick and Bubba. Although Rick and Bubba does air on top 40 stations ZBQ 94.1 Tuscaloosa and Y 102 Montgomery, in my opinion I don't think Rick and Bubba are the best fit for a top 40 station because of the nature of their show. However, I cannot think of any other stations in Huntsville where Rick and Bubba could go, except maybe 93.3 The Wolf. That would at least put that station on the map in the metro area (by the way what is Wolf's morning show anyways?)

I don 't know how long Shady Nation is contracted at Hot 103.5, but maybe if 100.3 should decide to go top 40, maybe he could convince the program director to let he and Nick Nice do their own morning show (if not mornings than evening). I think that would pull in killer ratings for the 16-30 crowd in the mornings because they have just enough pizazz to woo Gen Y without being too conservative like Rick and Bubba or too edgy and over the top like Bubba The Love Sponge.

I just hope if Huntsville gets another top 40 station to compete with WZYP, they don't blow their morning show spot with Kid Kraptick or Bubba The Lust Sponge.

The Wolf's morning show is Todd Baker. He's former afternoon drive @ KKGO in Los Angeles.

I know, "What's a LA jock doing in AL?" He was let go for unknown reasons, which are still being debated by some of the Countryboard folks who lurk in the Los Angeles boards. I don't think it was ratings. He had decent numbers out there.
Maybe he has family in Huntsville.

The award for top prognosticator goes to WILD DJ! In the spring Arbitron: Fish is tied for 1st place with Dan and Dingo in the money demo (Persons 25-54).

I read on talkweather.com that while Bubba can be nice, Rick can seem kind of a jerk.

Okay, I have been out of the radio biz for nearly 10 years, I would guess most of you in here are still in it. From what I remember the money was in females 25-54 not males. Curious from all of you that have access to a book, who won females 25-54? Since I fit in that category, I feel it necessary to give my opinion. :)
1. I listen to Rick and Bubba, for a bit. Can't usually listen too long, especially when the conversation goes to sports...ugh. I like the Rivers music after R&B are gone. Do not care for the R&B music hour, please just make it the R&B station if thats all you have!
2. Haven't listened to Star 99.1 in about a year, I hate hearing the heavy breathing over the mic, whenever the male host is exhaling.
3. I was pretty loyal to DRM (love country music), but cannot take Dingo. I'm sure he is a nice man, but does not have what it takes to compete in this market. Maybe overnights in South Dakota some where. I also don't enjoy the rest of the day on DRM. Todd Berry was enjoyable, what happened to him? There also used to be a great gal on mid-days...no more. So now I get most of my country music fix from the Wolf. More music and more variety for sure, don't care about the morning show, just enjoy the music.
4. I tried listening to that Fish guy when he first came and I found him to be repulsive. One of the reasons I moved my family here was for the conservative family values, he is a disgrace. That was when he first took over for R & B so maybe he has cleaned it up. I am also active in the community as is my husband and I have never seen or heard him out helping the less fortunate.
5. I have not listened much since summer vacation started but I also frequent ZYP. I hate the music, but my kids like it. Mojo is a decent family man, and I know there won't be anything vulgar coming across the air waves. I would say in the past 3 years that I have been here, he has done more in the community than the rest of the radio peronalities combined. I don't listen all the time and I have heard him doing the bike thing with Marines, helping the families of the officers killed in Hsv, Juvenile Diabetes, speaking at churches and schools, hospital fundraisers, Childrens Miracle Network, some lady who died with no insurance in Athens, literally this list could go on all day.
6. My dial is probably on VNN more than anything right now, but after November that may (or may not) change. I LOVE that I can get it on FM now woohoo!!! Yes I am a bit of a geek, but a very well informed geek.

So, best morning show, depends on my mood and if I am alone or with my kids. Just my 2 cents. ( I am disappointed that several of you who have met Rick say he is a butt-head...not very Christian of him)

Welcome to the board and thank you for sharing your opinions! Please feel free to visit and comment anytime. I'm glad to see different perspectives from females. There isn't all that many female posters on here. You are absolutely right about the money being mostly in females 25-54, and I agree with your opinions on ZYP's morning show. I think many people share your opinion about Dingo on DRM as well, me included. Oh, and I haven't listened in a few weeks but I don't think Fish has really toned it down any yet lol. It is definitely a man's show for the most part.

Ok Welcome aboard Big Mama 70!

Todd Barry went to Clear Channel Birmingham and was recently fired by Clear Channel!

The money demo is Women 25-54, but it all depends on the client! Clients like Coke, Budweiser, Harley go for men!

The Women this book were won by WAHR and WZYP!

Here is where you lose me Big Mama!

I am a Christian! And I may not agree with all that is on the Go Fish Radio Show! But don't get all right wing on us and get offended! I hate that! Jesus got offended one time and that was with the Church! You don't have to be a Christian to do good things! I don't know if Fish is a Christian, but He has done some good things! Special Olympics for the Police in Decatur, Magazines for the Troops, Helped two people who were in really bad car accidents, fund raiser for Officer Freeman. Now just because you and your husband haven't seen him doesn't mean you know! So be easy on the man!

Mojo is a great guy! Maybe Fish does it for the people and not to get ratings! In My opinion Bikes or Bust is a joke! It seems too much like a self serving radio stunt! Just my opinion! I would doubt he does more than the rest of the Radio personalities combined! A lot of these charities in town are big social clubs and have employees that make 6 figures! Most of the Radio people in this town do it to get a logo out there! I don't go for that! If you wanna help the community! Just help them! Don't pat yourself on the back all the time!

Sounds like you are a Cumulus fan! Pro Wolf, WVNN and Mojo! And thats cool! Well I can't be Hypocritical too I am a Fish Fan! I am a guy!

I have kids in Huntsville City Schools and my kids come home with far more than what I have ever heard on The Go Fish Show!

But that is just my two cents!
