Who has the largest News studio in Providence? Who will be first in HD?

I just watched a great tour of the WCVB studio in Boston when they went HD. You can see it here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7UKmashlMw

So does any studio in Providence have the capability to look nearly as good as WCVB or WHDH? They both have rather large looking Sets. I don't think Providence even has a large news studio ANYWHERE. As it stands.... does anyone know who has the biggest studio in town? I'm hoping that if designed correctly one of the Providence stations could build a set that takes up every inch of the studio just like WCVB has done. Bottom line is that large looks more professional. Even if that just means a lot more bare floor to see when the camera zooms out. (it doesn't matter). Large LOOKS Better!

I know that many years ago WPRI had a decent looking set when they were owned by CBS. Two levels. They would do Sports from the upper level. The camera would zoom out and the studio had a major market feel to it. So I am sure if done right they can at least make the studio LOOK big again. I believe that using the every inch in the room technique would be great. WCVB understands this. I would love to see that in providence. But I am afraid that they probably waste a lot of space which makes the studio seem smaller. There always seems like a lot of extra room behind the news desk and the back wall at WPRI. If I designed the set I would push the news desk a lot closer to the back wall and keep a lot more space in front. That's just one technique to make the place seem bigger and would give them more usable room.

I think WJAR uses space in a horrible way as well. They must... because that studio sure seems tiny. I don't think WLNE can do much though because I think they have the smallest studio to work with. But WLNE looks the most pleasant to me. Good color scheme and a nice feel to it. So as we head into this world of HD, will a Providence station build a nice spacious looking set? Who will it be?

WPRI hands down. WJAR has been sliding downhill fast. Just the other night, when the hawk landed on their anemometer, Gene Valecenti remarked that he hoped that the hawk wouldn't break it because "that would cost money, and we don't have any of that right now".

Yeah I heard him say that too. But it doesn't mean that WPRI has more money than Channel 10 does. They might be broke too. Plus we already know that WLNE is broke. They can't even afford to pay for programming and are being sued by CBS Distribution for late payment and penalties. So who has the biggest studio though. Channel 12 or channel 10?

I think WPRI might have some money.

For example, they still can afford to fly NewsChopper 12 around, they're still broadcasting a ton of news, while WJAR has cut back due to budget, they've picked up all of those syndicated shows that WLNE lost, and they haven't had to lay off anyone (to my knowledge), while WLNE and WJAR have cut back (especially WJAR, you know you've fired too many people when your morning anchor has to do weather, when he knows nothing about it, in addition to news).

So basically, you can see that WPRI is definitely in a much better situation than WLNE or WJAR. Plus, WPRI/WNAC have the advantage of being affiliated with stronger networks.

Frank must have learned something about the weather. After all, he sat next to Art for 20 years. :)
