I just watched a great tour of the WCVB studio in Boston when they went HD. You can see it here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7UKmashlMw
So does any studio in Providence have the capability to look nearly as good as WCVB or WHDH? They both have rather large looking Sets. I don't think Providence even has a large news studio ANYWHERE. As it stands.... does anyone know who has the biggest studio in town? I'm hoping that if designed correctly one of the Providence stations could build a set that takes up every inch of the studio just like WCVB has done. Bottom line is that large looks more professional. Even if that just means a lot more bare floor to see when the camera zooms out. (it doesn't matter). Large LOOKS Better!
I know that many years ago WPRI had a decent looking set when they were owned by CBS. Two levels. They would do Sports from the upper level. The camera would zoom out and the studio had a major market feel to it. So I am sure if done right they can at least make the studio LOOK big again. I believe that using the every inch in the room technique would be great. WCVB understands this. I would love to see that in providence. But I am afraid that they probably waste a lot of space which makes the studio seem smaller. There always seems like a lot of extra room behind the news desk and the back wall at WPRI. If I designed the set I would push the news desk a lot closer to the back wall and keep a lot more space in front. That's just one technique to make the place seem bigger and would give them more usable room.
I think WJAR uses space in a horrible way as well. They must... because that studio sure seems tiny. I don't think WLNE can do much though because I think they have the smallest studio to work with. But WLNE looks the most pleasant to me. Good color scheme and a nice feel to it. So as we head into this world of HD, will a Providence station build a nice spacious looking set? Who will it be?
