Who has the strongest FM signal(s) in New England?

WPOR 101.9 FM. A pretty strong station, can hear it on Nantucket. however, WCIB murders it, but then again, when its foggy, It commits "Radio Genocide" to Cool 102.

I think "the Rock and Roll Blimp" was high atop someone's list.. Can they still say, "From Bangor to Boston" or are there any LPFM's in the way ??

Non-com WERU 89.9 Blue Hill has a translator in Bangor at 102.9. They've had it for about 10 years now effectively wiping 'BLM out of Bangor.

I guess that leaves the "Boston" portion for the Blimp, I know you can hear BLM' pretty well on the "Nawth Shohe by the watah "

You know, I have been reading through this thread, and am shocked no one mentioned WHDQ.
Since WHDQ moved to Ascutney, their signal is clear to Ticonderoga, NY, South it gets into Northampton, MA well, and I've received it as far south as Agawam. I am unsure how it does east but due north it I've also heard it in Cabot, VT. I would consider WHDQ being in the top 10.

Also WAQY in Springfield,MA should get an honorable mention. I can pick up WAQY on the Cape just about every time I travel out there, it is very strong here in the Providence area, and I know it carries out on the pike past 495 just about to Exit 13. (What is amazing about it too, is it is not a full B, it is a reduced B. At full power, their ERP would be 19kW, according to the FCC HAAT FMPower program).

So here is the list compiled from the previous posts...
WHOM 94.9 king of the list....
The rest "super signals"
WGBH 89.7, WGIR 101.1, WAMC 90.3, WBLM 102.9, WEZF 92.9, WVPS 107.9, WPKQ 103.7
WCRQ 102.9, WTOS 105.1, WZRT 97.1, WEQX 102.7, WAAF 107.3 (Old Site), WEEI 103.7
WKCI 101.3, WEBE 107.9, WQCB 106.5, WMEA 90.1, WVOM 103.9, WAQY 102.1, WHDQ 106.1

While WHDQ's signal is better off of Ascutney than the old Green Mtn. site, the signal still is very hit or miss going west, especially with higher mountains like Killington and Pico in the way.

WAQY hell, they make it all the way to new haven down towards Westport Ct. it where then they get killed by adjacent 101.9 out of NYC since WAQY DB I am sure is pretty weak down toward that way. I wonder if 101.9 NYC was not there os WAQY would make it toward Stamford/Norwalk maybe... who knows...

WHDQ... add lyndonville VT and east burke Facing south to the list. I have clocked it on my walkman riding the kingdom trails. the signal cannot go any further north because of 106.1 a french canadian signal screaming in from Canada on 106.1 I figure I let you know where the end of the line was on WHDQ...

105.1 WTOS FM... I listen to them while riding all the trails that face East in East Burke/Lyndonville. I am currently listening to them 100 miles away from the station in My dorm room in VT as I type this :p

WHDQ does send a weak signal into Concord and Loudon, NH, but does not usually penetrate the Merrimack Valley any farther south than Bow. Then again, WZRT does just as well in the same area and comes from much farther west.

Another good Vermont signal is WEQX, which I've routinely picked up in Milford and Amherst, NH. In fact, it's the only VT signal I've picked up there. You can pull that one in from the Mohawk Valley of NY all the way to the Souhegan Valley of NH. Not too shabby.

By the way, I second the motion to give an honorable mention to WAQY. It gets into 6 states (inc'l NY) and sends a respectable signal over a very wide area.

SOUTH of Worcester MA, WHOM dukes it out with the new hip hop translator from Worcester on the same frequency. Each side "wins" about 1/2 the time. I also got HOM in the parking lot of a golf course in Hebron CT (about 15 mi E SE of Hartford) , in Nova Scotia, and in NY state just E of Lake George. (I'm not crazy about HOM's format; was curious to see how far they get out).

Whereabout in Nova Scotia can you hear WHOM? I would assume by the coast obviously, moreso over by Digby or Yarmouth I would guess?

I have received WHOM pretty well in Yarmouth NS in the car, HOM' is also listenable in eastern New York in places like Ticonderoga and parts of the Northway around there.. BLM and the Dennysville station on 102.9 tussle it out there as well. Checking out AM reception in Yarmouth is a lot more interesting, especially in that there hasn't been any local AM service there since the local yokel station there moved to FM a few years back.. You know you're a radio geek when......

Bad english moment.. BLM and the station in Dennysville ME on 102.9 tussle it out for FM reception in Yarmouth NS just to clarify my post.. Just to keep on topic, WVPR 89.5 atop Ascutney has a very underrated signal and seems to get out further than the co-located WHDQ signal, perhaps not as many 'FM obstructions' around the 89.5 signal..

Oh the good old days of Eddie trunk on 102.7 WNEW-NYC. I would battle it out with WEQX to have a listen on Heavy Metal. allthough WNEW won out, WEQX did come in. this was in Kent,CT on good old Skiff Mountain where I attended boarding school 2001-2004. (Marvelwood) you would go 1/3 a mile up the road NYC stations would disappear and Albany stations rocked! also go down the other way WAAF came in on their old Paxton tower clearly. 103.7 WEII (Fnx radio at the time) as well as other boston stations I clocked up on that hill. when I am up there again I'll have to see if 94.9 comes in

(WCCC rocked the best!)

Echoing Jo Jo's remarks some of the Maine FM's. particularly Bangor are receiveable in Yarmouth NS. But WHOM was as well which has to be at least 175 air miles from Mt. Washington.

Maybe it was tropo, but I once received a weak signal of 106.5 FM of Brewer, ME (Bangor market) here in New Britain, CT. This had to be around 1990 or so. It would be impossible now because WBMW-FM 106.5 of Ledyard, CT (New London/Groton market) signed on not too long after that.

Although I haven't lived there in 20 years, Old Orchard Beach, ME, while lousy for UHF television (in my case), was rather good for FM and VHF television. I used to get a faint signal of Boston channels 4 and 5 at least twice a week. While stations like 92.1 of Sanford were spotty, WTOS-FM 105.1 from Skowhegan, ME wasn't too bad. I used to have a tough time getting 107.5 from Lewiston. They were WBLM-FM at that time.

thats because most of the FM's north of Augusta are C's or maxed out Class B stations

WMME in Augusta is a 50kw that i can receive regularly north of Bangor, B 98.5 in Waterville is a Class C station that I can get on Route 9 towards Calais, 'NSX comes is pretty good in waterville. Most of the other augusta FM's can make it to bangor and most of the Bangor FM's can be received in augusta and some go beyond both ways.

I don't know who's got the strongest signal, but I've got the most talent. ;D

HOM boasts the largest coverage area of any FM station in North America or something to that effect..

Thats a good mention about WBCI. I know you can hear WBCI on Cape Cod rather frequently.

But anywhere west of there 105.9 is populated by WROR HD sideband noise and WHCN out of Hartford, CT.

I wanted to add that a few weeks ago when I was coming home from Gray, Me I was getting 92.3 WMME all the way to Biddeford. Far past what radio-locator.com predicted.

Another station I wanted to add as one of the strongest FM signals is 93.7 WMKK because I have always been able to receive it in Sanford, ME.
