Who is Kevin Whalen And Why Is He On Boston Radio?

C

Casablanca

Guest
Who is Kevin Whalen who I hear now on WRKO on Saturday's?
He has a worse Boston accent than the disgraceful fake Boston accent Boston/Cambridge actor Matt Damon had in the piece of junk movie, The Departed [ By the way Mark Whalberg is the real crook in that movie which you don't discover until he murders Matt Damon]
But back to Kevin Whalen: Go directly to a speech school and lose that horrendous Boston accent. It is like scratching nails on a blackboard and it gets in the way of anything he says.

Where does Jule "The Executioner" Kahn find these fourth rate individuals with no talent, no voice but a big ego. Whalen probably sells himself cheap and that is his calling card to Kahn.

I like Mass. Accents... Eddie Andelman is over the hill now but when he did the Sports Huddle in the 70s, it was pahhht of the show's chahhhm. Also, Larry Johnson, Lenny Megliola (sp?), Fred Smerlas and a few others I'm missing, no doubt, have Mass. accents.

He is one of the two hosts of Pundit Review radio the Sunday night show highlighting bloggers. The other is
Greg Jackson who wrote a book called Conservative Comebacks to Liberal Lies. The idea is that blogs are
a new media that deserve attention, from Daily Kos to Little Green Footballs to the "mil blogs" (military;
Vets For Freedom, Black Five...). Yes
not a polished voice and def a Boston accent, but apparently he talks "with a voice that came from
you and me", to use a line from a famous Don McLean song about the day the music died...

Had Clear Channel put any effort into WXKS/WKOX when it was prog talk they could have done a similar
show focusing on local/national progressive bloggers. But noooooooooooooo.....

Casablanca, for a guy who seems to have such animosity toward 680-AM, you sure do listen a lot.

Good observation Mickey. Its a funny thing about radio that the people who claim to hate the station most listen the most. It must have something to do with the proverbial fine line between love and hate. It happens in email all the time:

"Your station makes me sick, and so do the morons who run it. Why would anyone want to hear Stairway to Heaven 3 times in one week? And do you realize you played I Miss You by the Stones on Tuesday at 9:45 am and again Thursday at the same freaking time!!! Thank god for satellite."

When it comes to wrko, Casablanca seems just another of these poor lost souls.

... off topic but I vehemently disagree about the Depahhhhhted! And it's very nice of you to give away the ending

If you hate him, he MUST be good. I'll have to listen.

People have a right to complain about a station if they wish, but is it a matter of you simply don't like what they're doing, or you have a grudge against them for some reason? (Grudge? He's on Sunday nights--oops,
that's Drudge! :)
In my own case I don't work for Entercom but I've listened to 680 when they were top 40 years ago,
into the talk era with Jerry, Gene, and Howie, et al, and right now I listen to Howie and the Sox. I don't
agree with their choice of a morning host, certainly...

I did hear complaints about the accents in The Depahhted and wanted to see for myself but yesterday I
foolishly attempted to rent a copy at a Blockbuster on a Saturday at 4 pm. Nope--all gone. Maybe later today if I get up that way but the copies that got returned early this morning are prob. gone by now.

Rent a copy of a good performance of Shakespeare's MacBeth instead.
Same amount of blood on the floor, better written and even with mediocre Shakespearian actors better than 90 % of the actors in the Departed. Leonardo DeCaprio is the only one who shines in The Departed. Jack Nicholson looks and acts like an old fool. Scorcese must have hired him for his name only because he was certainly miscast. No Whitey Bulger.
