Who is that man and what has he done with Al Roker? And more of the Rose Parade

I know the truth. Parade magazine comes with my newspaper on Sunday.

I can't believe two separate people, and maybe three, mentioned equestrian units on ABC. ABC hasn't shown a horse in this parade in years. Wait, correction. One was sort of shown before a commercial break. And others as Jane Goodall read Dr. Seuss and highlights were shown.

I feel sorry for anyone watching only ABC thinking they're seeing the whole parade. NBC doesn't exactly get it done either. Though two floats got shown long after ABC did it. Only CBS has ever admitted doing this. And ever since CBS dropped out, no one on broadcast TV has shown the parade until the end (I found this out when a newspaper columnist said a local band didn't get shown because they marched past the cameras after 1:00), but at least NBC shows more than they once did.

ABC showed the wedding, but so did NBC--eventually.

When the soldier and his wife were reunited, I saw several cameras, so I decided to see what NBC was doing. Yes, they did that live.

ABC wastes so much time on interviews and behind the scenes. I'm trying to get a look at a float and they show me extreme close-ups, keeping me from seeing the entire float. And who knows what goes on during those interviews? Fortunately, NBC is usually showing us.

I taped both parades so my TiVo would be showing at least one channel when I turned on the TV. But with certain details I missed, I need to go back and see both parades again. Should take about five minutes with fast-forward.

Tape the Rose Parade on HGTV. No commericals.
I can't afford that channel. I get broadcast stations, a news channel, a shopping channel, public access, WGN America and TV Guide Channel.

Let me add: after one of the networks aired the "Cars" float and the tow truck hooked up to the float, the next commercial was for Prilosec. With who else? Larry the Cable Guy.

Both networks had that but at different times.

Hannah Storm was supposed to be on NBC's coverage this morning just 3 weeks after suffering serious burns at home. Anyone see her? How'd she do?

I heard the name Hannah Storm. All of the hosts I saw did really well, meaning corny on NBC and professional on ABC. I didn't pay much attention to the hosts as I was trying to see the floats and so on.

She works for ESPN.
That means she was on ABC. I was thinking that's where I heard the name. WMC was wrong. I didn't know who Al's co-host was.

She looked strange but I just attributed that to age.

I just heard audio from the parade coverage on the radio. I didn't recognize the anchor's name but it was ABC News. I may have missed this at the beginning since I didn't turn ABC on for a couple of minutes. I was actually a minute late for NBC. When I watch the tape Ill see what I missed both places.

I am not a regular viewer of the Rose Parade and after watching NBC's disaster this morning I now realize how little I am missing:

1. Focus on stupid wedding (this is part of a parade?).
2. Hype a marching band from Mexico then cut away after 10 seconds (and just as they were beginning their act) to yet another "heartwarming" soldier "coming home". Hey, I am a veteran too but showing continuous "soldier surprises child" is wearing very thin.
3. Stupid statements from parade hosts who should know better.

Since when does Al Roker have the jewels to be an effective ad-hoc commentator? And who was his sidekick....the only female willing to get out of bed early on New Year's Day?

But, hey, it was nice of NBC to show all those previews. I can now take NBC off my pre-sets and not worry about missing anything this coming season.

NBC's coverage was at least better than ABC's, in terms of how much they showed.

I remember seeing the marching band from Mexico on screen for quite a long time. Maybe it was ABC.

You didn't watch NBC's versions of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics, did you?

I NEVER watch the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic games.

I forgot one detail. Do they clean up after horses during the commercials?

I caught one crew doing just that. Men in white, plus a well-dressed woman who seemed frantic as she ran out to them.

This was obviously NBC, as ABC seems to deny any horses marched in the parade.

We watched some with the kids, but on KTLA since we have superstations on Dish. Bob Eubanks hosted along with another woman who I didn't recognize. If you have KTLA, they are repeating coverage all day. Good job from the station who has telecasted the parade for 66 years (and at least one more as an experimental station).

Stephanie Edwards...

I haven't watched the Rose Parade, or for that matter, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in more than a decade (if not longer). There's very little, if any, entertainment value to them. Mix that in with the commentary and I'd rather probe my brain through my ears with a red hot poker.

What is it about parades that turn otherwise professional-sounding broadcasters into cloying "aw shucks, it's just me and maw watchin' the floats go by" idiots?

I didn't watch the parade but a commercial promo I saw a few days ago said Alison Sweeney would be co-hosting with Al. Alison is a long-time actress on Days of our Lives and also hosts The Biggest Loser when it's on.
