Who Is The #1 Oldies Station In The Country?

As far as 12+ share, two of the highest I can think of right off hand are WMJI/Cleveland and KOMA/Oklahoma City.

Oldies 94.5 KOOL-FM in Phoenix used to be #1 12+.

#1 Oldies Station(s)

Far as Top 50 markets go, there probably is no single #1 but a group of strong,
consistent performers:

WMJI, 3WS, WOGL, WOMC, KONO, WODS, KBSG.

Out of the Top 50:

WOLL/West Palm Beach, KOMA/OKC, WSRZ/Sarasota, WXLY/Charleston.

Re: Most Listened To Oldies Station?

Which oldies station has the most total listeners. WOGL? KRTH?

How about KOLA, in 3rd place 12+ Riverside-San Bernardino, CA Market # 29 (?).
And if you discount #2 KFI because they are primarily the LA market, KOLA is #2.

Re: #1 Oldies Station(s)

I think KOLA gets forgotten because Riverside-SB is viewed as part of the L.A.
area. It's one of those oh-by-the-way markets, like Nassau-Suffolk or Middlesex- Somerset-Union NJ. More like extended suburbs than radio markets talent talk about aspiring to. "Oh, yeah, if I could just land a gig in Union NJ...".

Though it's not tops in it's market, WODS (Oldies 103.3) is a consistent #4FM in the 12+ share in a top ten market...It is Inifnity owned...but there's a Hot AC station that is also owned by Infinity that has been close to this whol jack nonsense, and there's also an existing Entercom 93.7 Mike-FM.

WODS has been around since the late 80s and for now, I'd think could counr as one of the larger oldies stations...

I hear that WODS is a pretty good station.....
Could 100.3 count as one of the top Oldies stations, as far as the presentation goes?

I offer WMJI/Cleveland. Perennially #1 12 plus in Cleveland the last 12 books. It's also in the Top 3 in the nearby Akron market (#72).

No oldies station is consistently rated as high as WMJI/Cleveland. Not even close. #1 12 plus over 12 books in a row. AM show Lanigan and Malone consistently #1 or #2 P25-54. All dayparts never rated below #3 P25-54.

WOLL is an AC. Hasn't been oldies for over 2 years.

Charleston is market #88

WSRZ is high up there as well.

What about WRQN/Toledo? A traditional oldies that is always top 5 P12 plus. AM Show is Top 3 P25-54.

oldies station clarification

You're right- WMJI is a great performer. WOLL is 100% non-current- they play a few 90s tunes in the mix but I don't think you can really call them AC without currents. From 6am today:

Right Down The Line Gerry Rafferty
Heart Of Rock And Roll Huey Lewis & The News
Bad Girls Donna Summer
You Can't Hurry Love Phil Collins
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Elton John
Just Remember I Love You Firefall
Have I Told You Lately.... Rod Stewart
I'll Be Around Spinners
Whenever I Call You Friend Kenny Loggins
Good Lovin' Rascals

I'm not sure about your point about Charleston's market size- I made a very clear distinction between top 50 and top 100 markets.

Re: oldies station clarification

I think to answer the ORIGINAL poster's question, who is the most listened to oldies station, we need hard numbers--not just ranks, etc.

And, of course, because of dumb stupid useless Arbitron and their "rules" (a pox on their house!) we can't post actual audience numbers here.
Damn them. Damn, damn, damn them!

It would be interesting to see exactly who has the most listeners in the aggregate. L.A.'s a big market, but KRTH isn't ranked that high. Cleveland and Akron markets are over 3 mil, and WMJI ranks high in both. But are the Majic listeners in that 3 mil more than the lower ranked KRTH listeners in a supersized market?

Also, let's further define the parameters:

Are we talking most listeners OVERALL, or most listeners in the demo 25-54?

Unanswered questions, thanks to stupid copyright laws.

(Please note, most of that is sarcasm. I'm all for copyright protection.)

Has anyone considered Magic 102.7 in Miami?

#1 Oldies Station - not

no way, Jose. Their most recent book is by far their best. Over the years, they've rarely been in the Top 10 and really are quite mediocre sounding.

top oldies stations

Well Johnny, that's not as easy as it sounds. In individual markets, rank is everything. And, the NY, LA, Chicago, SF & Philly markets win by default because of their huge cumes. You can't compare AQH shares but they're all relative to their individual markets (i.e.: a 6 share isn't much in Fargo
but in New York it's probably top 3 almost every book).

Frankly, there probably isn't any single "#1 Oldies station in America"- there are a group that are top performers, another much larger group that are good
performers and the rest are either up & down or ranked consistenly low.

Make sense?

Oh, it makes perfect sense to me: and it gets at what I wanted to point out. The phrase "#1 oldies station in America" and "most listened to oldies station" is just so wide a concept, with so many variables (and differences) that either doesn't have a definitive answer. But we do have some great candidates, which we all have pretty much named above and below...

not based on numbers. not even top 5.
