Who should be in the 2009 Rhode Island Radio Hall of FAme

Eddie Zack would get my vote too; I was privileged to work with him in the the '80's at WHIM. He later went on to John Fuller's WJJF 1180 in Hope Valley. I think he was also on WRIB years ago.

Yes, Eddie Zack should probably be given first consideration. I totally forgot about him in my earlier post, but his accomplishments on radio are many. Just in longevity alone, his show was on the radio and or tv in one form or another for 60 years, not to mention coast to coast on network for awhile.

I just realized Sherm Strickhauser was in the inaugural installation of the RIRHOF. Excellent choice, as well as Chuck Stevens. Joe Thomas should not be overlooked; a local boy who managed to make a very long career in Rhode Island radio.

Eddie Zack was a local treasure with national quality talent.

Okay, I'll bite--

My nominees for 2009 are

Norm Jagolinzer (what a set of pipes)
Mike Sands (Lost him far too young)
Cruisin Bruce (Smooth as they come)
Mike Sheridan (Best Traffic guy ever)
Rick O'B (Knows classic rock like no one else)
Ron St. Pierre (A Providence radio legend)
Paul Perry (Surprised no one's mentioned him !)

There are more, but these are my top picks.

DJ Buck( former WWKX, Now on Hot 93.7 C.T.) has my vote .

No one who uses DJ as a title should get in any hall of fame

Mike Sheridan is a great choice because he was THE FIRST Traffic Reporter in Providence radio.WSNE was the first I believe to do traffic updates and then of course Tony Dibiasio.

Mike's the ironman alrighty, but not the first.
And, as a former WSNE PD, I can state that WSNE sure wasn't the first station to do traffic.

The-first-of-three-times-I-moved-to-RI, 1974, WHIM -- a 1110AM simulcasting on the-frequency-now-occupied-by WHJY -- was a Country station. They had billboards on 95 and I-95 touting their morning show "Pappy & Cap'n Jack."

"Pappy" was the aforementioned Philbrook, who, if I remember this correctly, started as Chief Engineer there (?).
"Cap'n Jack" was a traffic reporter IN A HELICOPTER.
Imagine?

Tony D and Joe Fusco on WPRO go back a long time ago (I can remember Tony flying over the Outlet fire during a report and not compensating for the updrafts from the fire and on air sounding VERY worried) and there was also the CVS Samaritan driver that got killed on duty who's name escapes me; but traffic has been a part of the market for maybe 25 years, if not longer....

Sorry, I was wrong.I thought that was what I was told.Holland I you have credibility so I will take your word for it.

Imagine, Country music on 94.1 fm as WHIM.It did happen.

Geoff Charles being forced to play Slim Whitman. Now that would be funny.
I am only joking.

Pappy Philbrook was a great engineer before and after his dj days. This is a clip from the Phoenix from 2005 after he died.

"R.I.P.

. . . Carroll "Pappy" Philbrook, a pioneer in local radio and longtime station engineer at radio stations WHIM, WHJJ, and WHJY. In fact, Pappy literally built the stations, put together the equipment, wired the boards, etc. He was known and loved by generations of radio people, from sales staffers to on-air personalities."

John Scanlon was the CVS Samaritan driver that died. I don't remember the specifics. But his reports were
featured on 920 WJAR-AM.

Longtime voiceguy for WPRI-TV. And former WHIM AM/FM jock Jim O'Brien should be inducted into the Hall Of Fame.
And YES WHIM AM/FM did have an eye in the sky.

Having worked at one of the stations that Pappy was chief engineer for in East Providence. The man could take something that was completely broken. And make it better than new!!! He is missed!!

That's it! It's been bothering me all day, thanks Truth for shaking the cobwebs out!

Constitutional question

ARE nominations confined to on-air people?
Or could, for instance, a Hall-of-Fame-quality GM or Sales Manager or copy writer be nominated?

All contributors to the radio industry in Rhode Island can be considered on-air and off-air alike - and your suggestions are definitely appreciated! Be on the lookout for news on the Class of 2009, coming soon!
