Who should be in the 2009 Rhode Island Radio Hall of FAme

Rumor has it that John Manzi, aka Big Ange (Andy Jackson) will not be in the list of nominees for the Hall Of Fame in 2009. I find this extremely hard to believe. Few radio personalities in Rhode Island radio history made a bigger mark in the industry.

Lotsa politics I'm sure but radio is lotsa politics. I didn't really have any major issues with the first group inducted other than Arlene Violet who I think is in there because she's generally well known for her past as a nun, lawyer, and A.G. rather than her radio stints. I think every group of inductees will be spread out over a certain number of specialties like jocks, news, sports, etc rather than concentration on one. There really are more jocks than news or sports people that are probably logical inductees so it's harder for the people who came from the music end of it. Paul and Al were obviously a given.

Not true - Big Ange was nominated and is being considered. If he, or anyone else you might favor don't get in this year, it certainly doesn't mean they won't EVER get in...politics are not involved in ANY way here. Our board members have been carefully selected and chosen to avoid "politics." This is strictly a merit-based honor, to rightfully recognize those who have greatly contributed to our industry. But Moonstruck is right on this - we are trying to spread this around to include all formats, and eras. The idea is for each class of inductees to provide a "snapshot" of RI radio history.

I hope anyone with an interest in RI radio will contribute to the HOF in some form or fashion, through an associate membership, a ticket to the induction ceremony, or just by talking it up. If you haven't visited the website, please do so. If you have any questions or comments, fire away...and thanks.

One more name that ought to get mentioned......if not for induction to the hall of fame, then perhaps some sort of "lifetime recognition" award:

Edmund Dinis......another of this market's pioneers, starting up the area's first full-time foreign language radio station, 97.3 WJFD in New Bedord, and serving the region's portuguese-speaking community for almost 40 years.

Jim O'brien was the music director and morning guy at WHIM and later Mornings and PD at WCTK. I worked with him at both stations and he absolutely should be in the hall of fame. Of course he did voiceovers for PRI but I think most importantly he was a great air talent, he did a great job with the music and personally has one of the best set of pipes I have ever heard. After he left WCTK he went to the Providence Fox TV outlet and did voiceovers for them for years. Anyway he was always hugely popular, did an excellent job on and off-air for two decades. You can still hear him doing tags on national TV commercials (listen for the voice at the end of the Sham Wow spots). Jim O'Brien deserves a spot in the hall of fame for being an enduring voice and personality reaching into practically every home in RI.

Tony D and Joe Fusco on WPRO go back a long time ago (I can remember Tony flying over the Outlet fire during a report and not compensating for the updrafts from the fire and on air sounding VERY worried) and there was also the CVS Samaritan driver that got killed on duty who's name escapes me; but traffic has been a part of the market for maybe 25 years, if not longer....

John Scanlon was the CVS Samaritan driver that died. I don't remember the specifics. But his reports were
featured on 920 WJAR-AM.

Longtime voiceguy for WPRI-TV. And former WHIM AM/FM jock Jim O'Brien should be inducted into the Hall Of Fame.
And YES WHIM AM/FM did have an eye in the sky.

Having worked at one of the stations that Pappy was chief engineer for in East Providence. The man could take something that was completely broken. And make it better than new!!! He is missed!!

FYI - the announcement for the Class of 2009 is set for March 26th. And our Induction Awards dinner/ceremony is scheduled for May 14th, at the West Valley Inn in West Warwick. Cocktails (lots of them) at 6:00 PM, dinner at 7:00. Ticket prices remain the same as last year, at $50 per person, or a table of 10 discounted for $450.

If you're interested in supporting the hall, the inductees, radio in RI and our charitable cause - I hope you'll be there! Any questions - feel free to contact me - and thanks!

Gotta go with Jimmy Gray. Based on his sense of humor and length of service and devotion to RI.

Carolyn was on WGNG early-early, as "Tracy" someone.

APPLAUSE-APPLAUSE-APPLAUSE for Jimmy Gray to the Hall.
One funny, gifted guy.
A Pro Personality in the heyday.

Does that mean Jimmy Gray is in the RIRHOF this year? Inductees are being announced Thursday. If so, he deserves it. We need more inductees from back in the day when you needed more than computer proficiency to make it in radio.

Thats wonderful to hear Jimmy is being inducted this year Holland. Hopefully Chris Camp will be there sharing stories. Its long overdue!!

Skynet, you posted audio of Jimmy from 1987. Any chance you can edit it. And just post the Jimmy Gray Wakes You Up On PRO-FM jingle?
It was used going into the Expose song. Let me be the one. You posted the entire audio back in 11/08 or 12/08..

JUST to clarify...

I haven't heard a list of this year's inductees.

I was saying that I-sure-do-think Jimmy Gray SHOULD be there.

Fingers crossed,

Holland...go to the box...2 minute penalty...premature celebration! Write on the blackboard 100 times "I shall not exude jubilance of possible Hall Of Fame Candidates until the class is named!"
To quote quote a 70's-80's sitcom "Chame, Chame on jou!"

Fingers are crossed!! Jimmy Gray Wakes You Up On PRO-FM!!! On a side note. With Jimmy going into the Hall Of Fame. PRO-FM should
acknowledge his legacy & HUGE CONTRIBUTION to both stations.

Look up "mensch" in the dictionary...

When I first moved to RI (the-first-of-three-times) in 1974, Jimmy showed me a much warmer welcome than some recent radio immigrants have enjoyed. He really showed-me-around.

TO THIS DAY, I've gotten my hair cut at ONE place, where he bought me, since!
And Jimmy and I still share accountants and insurance agents.
Our doctor retired.

Which reminds me of the old George Burns gag: "George, you're almost 100 years old, and you're still smoking big cigars, slurping martinis, and running around with young women! What does your doctor say?" Burns took the cigar out of his mouth, paused, and deadpanned: "He died."

I'm going to go out on a limb & just predict who I think will be inducted this year. It's really not so much a matter of who from a long list of deserving people, but when they will be inducted. Last year there were 9 inductees if you count Paul & Al as 2 people, so I'll go with 9 & we'll see how wrong I was later this week.

Alphabetically:

Gary Berkowitz
Big Ange
Carolyn Fox
Jimmy Gray (he & Carolyn can prank each other on induction night)
King Arthur Knight
Jim Mendes
Ron StPierre
Steve White
Chuck Wilson
