WHO WILL GO CHRISTMAS MUSIC FIRST IN NEW YORK?

Unless someone plans a format flip after the holidays, only Lite will go..probably just before Thanksgiving. Remember, with PPM, you get rated for the entire month of December.

Why would someone start as early as Oct. 25th with Christmas? In late oct. I am thinking Brown and Orange, not Green and Red!

please do not rush Christmas!!! :( I love Christmas but not ready for it yet!!! Christmas music should not be on till 2 weeks before Christmas!!!

Even though a mere week of the month of December actually qualifies for the December PPM period; the rest, of course, is wrapped up into that "Holiday PPM" thing...

I'll answer as succinct and straightforward as I possibly can:
$$$

As far as I'm concerned, if you're going to start playing christmas music in October then you may as well have a year-round christmas station. There is no difference in playing christmas music in October or playing it in March. At either time it's out of place.

The difference is that by late October, retail stores (sadly) already have their Christmas decorations up, and may want to tune their in-store stereo system to an all-Christmas station.

If a station is planning a format flip at the beginning of the year, going anytime at this point is feasable. However, if Christmas is a part of your programming strategy like Lite, you're more likely to go around Thanksgiving, especially in a PPM world where you get rated the entire month of December.

The notable ratings skirmish vis-a-vis WLTW and WKTU might alter the schedule and setting somewhat.

Last year, WLTW was leading in most every statistic except maybe earned run average when they headed into the Season. IIrc, they emerged from it all with an 11 or so share of the toys.

This season, WKTU is apace in the demo race. And this season, Santa brought us Bob Pittman as an early gift.

I've always wondered why just the A/C stations are allowed free rein (so to speak) to stunt fot two months. This year, amid the 'stupid economy', some others might hop aboard. WWFS, WPLJ, and everyone's favorite dartboard WEMP may have a go at it. WFME and their growing multitude might start in on October 22nd if we and they are all still here.

And why limit playing Burl Ives just to FM? WBBR might want to think about opening their gifts early, too.

AC's target women all year. Christmas music is also targeted to women. Also, the Christmas format was developed by consultant Mike McVay for KESZ Phoenix years ago. After their success, ACs jumped every year.

The only market that I know of where a non AC wins this is Boston...where both Classic Hits stations WODS and WROR do Christmas but the market AC Magic 1067 does not.
