Why did they rename Oldies 98.1 to 98.1 WOGL?

Why did CBS rename Oldies 98.1 to 98.1 WOGL? And also, how long have they been giving away vacations to the Caribbean? Seems like that's their only contest

I was born in 1996. I can remember listening to WOGL with my mom as early as 1998, and they hae always been 981 WOGL. Plus, yes that is there shtick and the only contest they have. Sad, isn't it?

What is going on over on their HD-2, I know they overhauled their playlist a few weeks back but last night was insane. So much off the wall, all over the place music, (which is great I am not complaining), many small hits, some never played in Philly, I know this because I was in the Army in the early 70's, in all parts of the country and heard these tunes as local hits. That library has to be so much larger than the main signals. I wonder if its in house, or coming from CBS headquarters, because that music is not their normal style, it does seem that they are committed to HD, which is a good thing. They sound a little like WSTW's HD-2, which changed to soft hits a few weeks back.

Mostly R & B "oldies" at one time, and more 60s than anything else as well, starting around the mid-late 80s as I recall. Before they were OGL they also played 50s and forward.

"Oldies" is starting to get negative connotations with some advertisers. Even long-standing oldies stations now brand themselves like "Hits of the 'xx's, 'xx's, and 'xx's" with the xx's depending upon the exact demos they're going for.

Note that the YOUNGER end of the demographic spectrum for your average "oldies" branded format is aged 53 at the moment (Class of 1979, and that's pushing it.) Your typical oldies station by the definition that started being used back in the 90's tends towards 58-75. Advertisers don't want to be associated with that age group too often.

WOGL have become heritage calls in Philly, stretching back for almost three decades. It makes sense to play them up.

I still remember the day WOGL was born, fall of my freshman year at Trenton State College. I came back from class and turned on the radio expecting to hear WCAU-FM. Boy was I disappointed I guess WOGL is even playing some of the music Hot Hits played back in the '80s. To this day, I can't listen to WOGL because of what happened on that day many years ago... If I listen to oldies, I prefer Sirius 80s on 8.
