Why does dance music do so poorly in the U.S., but not in Europe? (and more)

few reasons:

took ya long enuff to post :
I feel the reason why dance doesn't do as well in the United States as it does in Europe is because of the some of the U.S.'s association with it being "gay."

not that i am homophobic, but mtv, which DICATES what WILL be played - uses DANCE MUSIC, on the reality shows,
when they introduce a "flamer" ( not someone who is 'just gay') but the most GAY, to the most extreme, usually
with like......reeeely 'fluffly' in the back ground ( and usually a novelity song, like crazy Frog).

[2]

number one:
other easy reasons, besides MTV, not wanting to acknowledge dance as music....they TELL YOU to listen,
download, kayne west/50,(and the others young joc, etc....dont believe me , it is TRUE:

- if MTV, as an experiment, (or an inside-joke ) decided to take, when the songs are new/current
and "place" them in the countdown ( say once every two weeks, give a song a "token" chart spot) and
have it rise just a few positions, and fade away...slowly. repeat this process, in ...say 2 weeks later,
and continue this pattern from memorial day (may) until labor day (september), and guarantee! the kids
at school dances in the fall, will be asking for at least 2 or three of these songs...
-it REALLY happened w/ "Everytime we touch" (cascada) / "heaven", dj-sammy a few years back...
soo....

[reason]number 2:
uneducated "kids" today, think: daft punk, one more time = techno.
alice deejay, "TECHNO" and, that "techno" sh-----t, is just one
steady beat ( which is irony, since ALL songs, repeat, hence creating a melody)...lol,
....but, also with dance music there are "radio edits" it makes it difficult if the only
available single for airplay is 6-minutes, plus... stations see that as one less song played
(less variety) and the almighty $$$$>one less commercial set/per hour.

second theory:

perhaps, the DANCE music: is "just that" made for dancing...

chr-stations, and even some reeeely great hot A/c's stations..
have daypart,week-day programming, and then "weekend" party-mixes/speciality shows:
-
that have incredible dance music, both new and old, amazing remixes, excellent dance-covers
of established hits, etc...etc....every market, at least one station, turns the dial to a club-dj,
...some more than others, and, some only get college stations, or the late, late shifts ( sat 2am-6am)
but, safe to say every one has a dance-block on the airwaves to satisfy the average dance fan.

time and place. even the mtv-"kids" that hate 'techno' will be slamming to it , say on a friday nite ( 11pm or so)
at their fave club, that mixes in a dance-hit set...or the radio station, that plays the hip hop set that
crosses over into a dance-remix of a current hip hop 'record' and then blasts out a few current club hits....

well, as dance fans , the "curosity" 10-minutes, of the "good" music, doesnt off-set, the 4 hrs, of "crap"
we have to listen to; but...would even "US" listen to a station, say...tuesday, 2:15pm, while at the office
or first thing in the morning to buy the sunday paper...? if u listen to bpm, then the answer is yes.
....but, even BPM ( which i believe is the best programmed dance station, on this forum), how many times..
can u listen to a current hit, before u think, *ugh* they just played this...or, a classic song, that is YOUR FAVE!!
...but u are tuning in, at 5pm, while in rush hour...

perhaps, dance music ...as the saying goes, less is more.
for me, not true, but...i have to admit, being where i live ( new york/ontario) back in the 90s...when there was
a freeekin surplus of dance music/dance stations, cd's, clubs, etc....it was refreshing to put on the
rock station...as a sigh of relief. listen to metallica, guns/roses, newer artists such as godsmack, disturbed,etc..
and, then re-apperciate the 'groove' well, maybe for the general public, the work week, they dont care what
is on the radio, since they are at work/office, etc...but, friday at 5pm , that is THEEE time, to ripppp it up!
a hott-mix, of the coolest songs for the week, and that feeling carries ( along w/ the alcohol) into the friday/sat night party..
by sunday, wind down, and get ready to do it again...the down time ( at-work favorites) makes the club-anthems
sound "better"

we are actually finding a lot of our listeners are listening at work to the station. It makes the day go by much faster and they are in a better mood. Radio needs to go back to when the programming was more important than the sales staff. Ratings were higher then and stations were making money, and in several cases more money. Let the programmers program. A well programmed station can be sold to advertisers. My 106 is a good example the reason you hear some rock tracks is because the sales side says they cant sell the station if it is labeled a dance station. Thats completely bs, thats a sales staff thats is making excuses for themselves. A good salesperson no matter what the product is can sell.

tangent, but i hear ya : )

danceRev/889, i hope i have that right...even though this was dance-focused at
the start, when u referenced my-106 , rock station ( i am thinking , either that is
the name, or...ur fave station @ 106.fm,lol) has it "right" i believe u.

u know your radio, and in 100% agreement with u!!! if u do let the programmers,
do their thing, results happen-fast!-and, makes radio fun! u nailed it, bro!
*NOTHING SELLS better than FUN RADIO* not EVEN big-name talents, or "the best" music!!
